New home is pay monthly with EDF- How do I switch to OVO top up?

Hello. I am moving to a new house and would like to stay with OVO. In the old house I paid based on the fact of use. Now when I try to re-register everything online I am offered a tariff plan 2. But I would like to stay on the payment by the meter for use. Online does not make such an offer. How can I switch to a new house without buying a tariff plan?

@Yurii thanks for your post - I can see some really helpful replies here.

I just want to add - remember that you’ll need the keys to the new house before you contact EDF to set up an account with them. Once you’ve set up an account with EDF you can then sign up to OVO. If you want to top up the meter instead of paying for a tariff, then you’ll need to follow @Blastoise186’s advice:

If you want to switch to OVO and be on Pay As You Go, you’ll have to call 0330 175 9669. Worth noting that PAYG isn’t always the best option - you should consider whether Pay Monthly might be more appropriate.

We can only switch you to be a Pay As You Go customer if the new place has smart meters. If the meters are traditional ones that you take a reading from, then you can sign up to OVO on the ‘Simpler Energy’ plan. That’s the standard plan where you can pay for what you use each month without needing a Direct Debit set up, if you prefer not to have one or be tied into a fixed tariff. Also, if there aren’t smart meters at the new place then we can book you an appointment. If you’re stuck with any of this our Support Team will be able to help you. I’ve included some previous Forum topics below that should help you with all of this, and please reach out to us if you have any more questions.

Best of luck with the move!

My guess is that some tariffs are location based. It might not be possible to have the same one at the different place. I would suggest to contact them. Another guess is that online doesn’t know that you are OVO current customer. When you are registering online, do make make new account, or do it under your current one? Is the new house already with OVO?

Thank you for your reply. a new home with EDF. I am from Ukraine and do not really understand all the nuances.

I have an account with OVO in the previous house where I lived and I was with OVO.

It turns out that I now need to switch to EDF because my new house is connected to it?

You can leave the old house with OVO and simply close the account when you move out - let OVO Support know you’re moving out and they’ll make the arrangements.

For the new house, since it’s with EDF right now, you must sign up with EDF to take control of the supply - and it must be on the same payment method that’s already in place. Only after that’s done, you can switch that house to OVO and/or switch payment method if you wish.

If you want to switch to OVO and be on Pay As You Go, you’ll have to call 0330 175 9669. Worth noting that PAYG isn’t always the best option - you should consider whether Pay Monthly might be more appropriate.

Yurii, it is important to let the supplier of the old house to know that you move your house. The same applies to gas (if you have one, and/or if it’s different from your electricity), water (if there is your name on the bill) etc. So, to make sure that you are responsible for bills only for the certain period of time. The same reason at your new house, in case if someone hasn’t payed their bills – you would not be responsible for that.

As @Blastoise186 said, at the new house you would need to register with EDF first. Then when your account is set up (it could take some days), you can ask OVO that you want them to be your supplier. I don’t remember how exactly it happened, but I use my old OVO account with the new added address (I moved house some time ago).
