How does switching away from OVO actually work?

  1. Do you actually get any credit you have back in a timely and stress free manner (I know legally they all have to but I doubt ovo care about the laws of the land).
  2. Who did you move to?

I can’t take any risks, my credit balance is huge. 12 months ago I was happy to be building up such a large credit. I have never seen a company lose the plot so fast in my life. They will either lose their license or go bust. I will simply drain my credit to sub £100 over winter and then run away but would rather run now knowing my credit will be safely returned in weeks and not months or god for bid never.

Cheers

If you’re owed a refund from OVO: you’ll get this straight to your bank account within 10 working days when you pay by Direct Debit. We have to send your refund by cheque if you don’t pay by Direct Debit – or if you’re on Pay As You Go.

If you have a balance to pay before you leave: we’ll need to raise an objection, as you can’t leave OVO officially until your balance is paid. You can still get financial support from us – speak to our team about this and they’ll be able to help.

How to let us know you're leaving

  • You don’t actually need to tell us. When you sign up with your new energy supplier, they’ll let us know.

  • Your new energy supplier will send us the opening meter readings you give to them.

  • It’s recommended that you send these readings to OVO too, in the usual way. This should help avoid any errors.

  • Then we’ll work out the final balance on your OVO energy account.

  • After this, you’ll either get a refund from us or a final bill to pay.

If there’s a balance to pay

  • You won’t be able to leave OVO until your balance is paid

  • If you need financial support, our team can help – please get in touch

  • You might want to set up an affordable payment plan to spread your costs

You can call collections and ask for a freeze of your DD at a lower level or a return of some of your credit just before your switch.

The rules for refunds after switching are the same for all suppliers as you probably already know.

Up to 6 weeks for a final bill. Then up to the 10 days for any credit refund following the final bill.

These are industry standard times that all suppliers have to meet.

Miss either of them and £30 compensation is normally automatically due.

Obviously depends on what you want from a supplier in terms of tariff etc , the Which report is worth a look at, although not perfect

I moved to Octopus. Yes, OVO return any credit in a timely manner.

If you want to move to Octopus I have a referral link that will give you £50 in your account.
