How can I switch from a business / commercial electricity supply to a domestic?

Help! I am on a commercial electricity tariff  (not OVO) and want to change to a domestic tariff (smallholding that is not generating an income). I cannot find anyone to help. Will OVO let me switch to them? Thanks

Domestic and commercial supplies

At OVO, we don’t supply commercial sites, if your supply is domestic but listed as commercial on the national database please ask your current supplier to get this updated first.

Howdy @nick100

Just so you’re aware, I’m one of the forum volunteers here, so what I’m writing isn’t the official view of OVO.

I’m afraid I’ll have to give you some bad news, but I’d much rather you know this upfront than make you find out the hard way later. And in fact, I know a lot of people would agree with me on that point.

OVO Energy is a domestic-only supplier and isn’t able to supply non-domestic customers right now, so if you try to switch a supply that’s currently registered as a business on the national databases, the switch will fail and you’ll remain with your existing supplier. There is a solution though.

If the property in question is no longer being used for business purposes - and you are not planning to restart anytime soon - then it may be possible to have the national databases updated to re-classify your supply as being for domestic use. Once that’s done correctly, OVO would be able to take you on as the system would identify your supply MPAN and MPRN as being for a domestic customer.

You’ll need to talk to your current supplier to make the arrangements to do this. If they don’t do domestic supplies, you may need to temporarily switch to a supplier that offers both domestic and non-domestic supplies, have them do the update and then jump to OVO from there.

Hope this helps!

From what I understand, you probably will be better off on a Domestic supplier and tariff. It’d get rid of all the extra hidden fees and apply certain types of protections that you don’t get on a Non-Domestic tariff like the price caps.

To do this, please switch to a supplier that serves both Domestic and Non-Domestic customers as you are now, then make the request to their customer service to be migrated to Domestic supply. They’ll do the rest (hopefully). After that’s all done, you should have access to all Domestic tariffs including the ones OVO offers.

Hope that helps!

Oooh I know I’m a little sad but I was very excited to get a tag. 😁

Yes we do both small and medium business and of course domestic/residential. We would have a few questions that we would need to have answered first to understand the usage etc.

Before changing an account from SME to Domestic and vice versa, we need to find out some information as to why this needs to be done so our Energy Specialists will usually ask some questions surrounding why you want to change from business use to domestic etc. (Don’t worry - they’re pros at this stuff!) I’m not 100% sure if you would have to brought over as a business then switched to residential though, but I’m super curious to find so I have asked the question.

I would definitely recommend speaking to us in the business dept on Monday when the phone lines are open again (9am). The number is 0808 501 5699. Please keep me updated. 🤗

Hi can you help I am with Opus just brought the property a fame building to convert into residential but it has a half an hour meter, £2200 every 2 months! Spoke to them and they are refusing to change over to residential as they do not offer that service anymore. I have called other providers and they say I must be changed over from business to residential before changing.

Hi @Amycarrigan ,

Beki doesn’t work at E.On Next anymore so she won’t be able to respond.

The best option is to switch to a provider that offers both Business and Domestic supplies and initially keep the account as a Business account. Once you’re on-supply, you can request to switch to Domestic which should then let you stick with that supplier or jump to any Domestic supplier of your choosing.

Either way, you need to switch away from Opus anyway - it looks like they’re shutting up shop soon and have completely terminated ALL sales - and they were always a Non-Domestic Only supplier anyway so wouldn’t have been able to flip the switch regardless.

Thank you so much for the advice, I moved to Ovo yesterday and had the best advice from them regarding contacting UK power network and reducing my bill by almost half, still on business half hour charge at moment but Ovo can supply both commercial and residential so fingers crossed I can get it changed over soon..

Again thanks for the advice, much appreciated

I currently have a domestic three phase meter in a barn conversion and with eon, they confirm the meter is listed as domestic but when trying to change to OVO you can only see commercial meter on echo or evo, eon have checked and says everything is. Correct what am I supposed to do

Hey @nick harsant

Sorry to hear about the trouble you’ve been having trying to get switched over.

There are a few things that could be going on so I’d like to check a few things for you in the national database.

I’ve sent a private message so we can try and help you with this.
