I have had an email today to tell me that OVO are now discontinuing the real time usage data collected by the smart gateway. I have been using this (via the api) to feed into OpenHAB and allow my smart-home to make decisions based on the current usage so am extremely disappointed at this decision.

However, i'm hoping that there is a way forward using the smart gateway. Looking more closely at the device it seems to be a fairly standard telegesis zigbee data collector. It has a web based management interface but I do not have the username/password for this. Does anyone know what it is? If I can get into the config then the sever that it posts to could be changed to my own one and then OVO can switch off whatever they like!

TLDR; Does anyone know the username/password for the smart gateway management interface?
Hmm, @krad Do you mean like this Chameleon variant...?

with this Spec....?

Did you perhaps notice this post from last month?
Interesting I can see mqtt stuff going out of the device. We should be able to get access to the data under gdpr, but i would imagine the latency issues would make it useless for real time monitoring

Can anyone tell us what is the purpose of the little black box connected directly (by Ethernet cable) to our broadband router? Can it be dispensed with?

It was installed by the engineer (indoors) when the meters (in the garage) were changed to smart meters.

Does it have any writing on it?

Is it connected to anything else, or just the router?

Can you post a photo of it, please?

It’s connected only to the router (and the mains).

It has ‘Zigbee Communications Gateway’ and technical details on the back (see 2nd photo).

Can we safely dispense with it (i.e. without affecting our smart meters)?

Thanks for your help

I think this is one for @Blastoise186

I want one!

It looks as if this device connects your smart meter to your home computer network (Ethernet or Wi-Fi), meaning you can get data direct from your meter to your PC. Without it, the only connection you’d have is a rudimentary in-house display (IHD). The black box should receive the same Zigbee signal that your IHD would get, so you should have real-time monitoring of your energy usage and access to the data stored in the smart meters. It may also open a world of opportunity in other respects, like making it possible to control Zigbee-enabled devices from your phone or computer. If you didn’t get a user manual with it, you can download it here: TG-PM-0510-ZigBeeCommunicationsGateway.pdf (silabs.com)

Did you get an IHD as well with your smart meters?  Here’s a little light reading for background: Smart Meters and In Home Displays - Topic Hub | The OVO Forum

/PS It looks as if  I may have got it all wrong, but I’m sure @Blastoise186 will put me right if so …

iPPS A search uncovered this long thread, which explains just why It’s taken me so long to add this PS. I’m now wondering why you were given a device that won’t (allegedly) work with your smart meters. Perhaps my assumption that you’re an OVO customer was wrong?]

Sorry for the wait! I just had to deal with a lot of stuff today.

My diagnosis so far means I agree with the others. Telegesis shut down back in 2015 when it was bought out by Silicon Labs. It is my reasonable belief that this was the old gateway device OVO used to use for real-time data back in the day. There’s little other purpose for such a device to be in your home.

Personally, I would recommend decommissioning it but not factory resetting or disposing of it yet, and then see if anything breaks as a result. If it doesn’t cause problems after a month, go ahead and factory reset it and recycle it. If it does cause issues, try plugging it back in and see if they’re solved.

OVO terminated the real-time data feed due to reliability issues. It’s unlikely to ever return in the same form.

Thanks, all 🙏
