Unable to move gas meter - too close to ceiling light

Hi all. We are converting our understairs cupboard into a WC and want to move the gas meter to a higher position (less than one metre away) on the same wall, with a view to hiding it inside a cupboard which will still be accessible if needed. The OVO engineer attended today and informed us that we could not move the meter because it must be a certain distance away from the ceiling light. Does anyone know what is the minimum distance away it needs to be? Or have any suggestions to get around this? Photos attached, thanks in advance!

Hey all, 

It'll definitely be far enough away from the light not to cause an issue, but what I would say is this… instead of moving it up and not being able to hide it why don't you get it moved to all fit in a 450mm bathroom cupboard?

 

You could probably hide most of the pipe work, meter and ECV within the cupboard and then use the cupboard for toiletries =]



If I’m going to be honest you'll probably be better off getting a local Gas Safe Engineer with a MET1 qualification to do the work.

​@Lukepeniket_OVO That is interesting, we were told by the engineer yesterday that it couldn’t be done which we were surprised about!

 

We were planning to hide the meter in a cupboard high up on the wall if we could move it there and box in the pipes. Do you think there is a more convenient place to move it into a cupboard? Space is quite tight in there.

 

Would a gas safe engineer be able to move the meter? I was under the impression that would need to be done by OVO. 

 

Its definitely a lot of work for one of our engineers to do and would fall massively outside the timeslot to complete this. 

I would recommend a local GS engineer with the MET1 Certification to be able to move the meter and relocate it to where you want =]

Hi ​@ConnorH ,

Based on your photos… It looks like the meter is probably as close to that light as it’s allowed to go. I don’t think you can move it any higher and moving it to another room will cost you a fortune.

I will ask ​@Lukepeniket_OVO to swing by as he knows more than I do. It may take him a while though as he gets pretty busy sometimes.
