Third-party access to smart meter data: recent failures

Many of those who are used to retrieving their usage data from third parties have noticed an interruption in the service recently. For me, it started on 13 June and has yet to be resolved.

Third parties (called ‘other users’ by DCC) are supposed to be able, with the customer’s permission, to contact a smart meter and retrieve usage and tariff data stored in it, which they can then present in a friendly form and also make it possible to download the data. This is in many cases a more efficient system than what suppliers offer via their websites.

So far, we’ve heard from customers using n3rgy and Hugo, and also apps like Loop which piggyback on n3rgy to get the data. It appears that only those with Aclara meters are affected, although this may be a red herring: all of the affected customers I’ve come across have indeed Aclara meters, but another common factor is the communications hub - in all cases WNC. Both n3rgy and Hugo say that their credentials are not being accepted when they try to retrieve data, which suggests a fault with the secure DCC network rather than the meter itself.

  • Can the mods get an update on this error from those responsible?

  • Will anyone having this problem please reply here and say so?

It would help if you could give your region (the first two digits of the 13-digit MPAN), your supplier, the time stamp of the last data packet received and the make and model of the meter and the communications hub. Here are my details for starters:

Region 11 (East Midlands)
Supplier OVO
Meter Aclara SGM 1416B
CH WNC SKU1
Last data packet 13/06/2024 03:00

Hey @sraper,

I’m really sorry to hear about the access issues you’re facing! It sounds frustrating. Maybe @JaneatGlow can jump in and help us figure out what’s going on?

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that we find a solution soon and get everything sorted out for you!

Hi both,

As of this morning, we still have almost 100 of our Glow users with an Aclara meter not getting data - and believe that any other ‘Other Users’ have the same issue. It is frustrating as of course it isn’t a priority for either the supplier, understandably as they are getting what they need to generate a bill, or the DCC.

Not that it helps but we’ve got a similar problem with a subset of Kaifa meters - but in that case there seems to be no pattern of model/firmware/comms hub variant….

And to think we put all this time in for what is a free service to the market on our part! 😂

Sorry not to have anything more positive to update on.

Thanks for the update

Haha, I KNEW you’d say that somehow…

And yeah, it’s not just you - I absolutely hate the Trilliant hubs as well because they’re so poorly documented. I’m just glad I run on an S2 Aclara with a WNC SKU1 hub that’s worked to perfection since 2021.

But you’re probably right. Given the migration to 4G, it’s unlikely those units will survive the migration process anyway. I still don’t know how they’ll deal with S1 at all!

Always busy - but pleased to also help in your world as this is not a supplier issue…. ! Waiting to hear back from the DCC now. Nice to hear from you @Chris_OVO - thanks for checking in :)

Unfortunately it looks as though the Aclara meter problem has started again - we’ve a number of customers whose electricity data stopped around 20/21 May.

Thanks for the note, Jane. It looks as though this problem was shorter-lived than last year’s - my data started coming through again today, and I currently have a full set of figures from 02:00 BST on 29 May (to 15:30 today - just an hour ago!).

I’ll keep an eye out for the missing data from 18 to 29 May, but I’m not too concerned as I have the data from other sources.

An update : the recent Aclara meter issue was a different one and has been resolved. Unfortunately the one from last year, that still affects several hundred people, remains open.

Thanks, Jane. Having said I wasn’t concerned about the missing data from during the outage, I see that the empty slots have all been refilled. Thanks to your conscientious and effective techs for getting this sorted out 🙇‍♂️

Quick update from me - my electricity data has started appearing in the Glow Bright app  - from April 27th 2025 after being missing since 19th March 2024.

It is still missing from Loop however, and I cant get access to N3rgys consumer site anymore to check - i’ve mailed n3rgy them to query it.

Good to hear. Glowmarkt get there eventually!

That’s because Loop jumped ship - their new parent Procode has its own DCC adapter, just like Glowmarkt, so they’re no longer using n3rgy. Unless you sign up with another n3rgy partner (I use Equiwatt), you won’t be able to access your data via data.n3rgy.com any more.

Just to say I am one of those “several hundred people” still affected by the original issue had no electricity reading for roughly 18 months now :(

Definitely one of those “how hard can it be” issues - surely
