I got a smart meter fitted today but it will not let me navigate with any of the buttons, displaying say there’s a new message but can’t read it.

If it’s the IHD that I think it is, ie a GEO Trio touch button that looks similar to this:
- Tap the Home button (the little house) twice to see how it toggles back and forth and shows a list of options as well as those graphics.
- In the List view tap the ‘< & >’ arrows to scroll up and down the list, Tap the ‘o’ to select the option that you want.
- Messages will be in ‘Inbox’.

If yours isn’t that type then could you post a photo of it so we can see just which make and model it is?

Nukecad has left some really helpful advice here already, have you been able to take a look at those steps? Without seeing a photo of the device we can only make best guesses as to what display you’re using. I’ve linked below to a few other topics which might also be helpful here:

It sounds like you cannot navigate in-home display (IHD). You should be able to read that message. Though, it probably says that the initiation process is completed, meaning that it is ready and working. I don’t know which one you have, mine is not touch screen, there are sensor buttons under the screen. Another silly suggestion, have you removed the display protection film?
