Kaifa Meter on economy 10, how do I find switching times?

I have just moved in to an all electric flat in Perthshire, and inherited an Ampy dual rate meter with 4 cables and one dummy port. I believe this means that there was an inbuilt timer for switching between high and low rates.

However…

I decided to switch to Octopus and have a smart meter installed. After installation, my smart display began giving me times for high and low rates; for example, low… 14:30 to 17:30. So, I now wish to ask 3 things!

1   Is it possible to find the timings for a full days cycle without sitting up all night?

2   Will my Dimpex Duoheat units turn on automatically on the low power cycles?

3   When I called Octopus, an agent gave me rates and times that are different to what is being displayed locally; timed from midnight to 07:30. I appreciate that this is an OVO forum, but members might have encountered a similar discrepancy when switching, and any advice will be received with much gratitude.

Hi @Dave-Nice-VIII ,

Octopus doesn’t support Economy 10. You may need to switch back to OVO to restore E10 support otherwise you will likely have billing issues.

It doesn’t sound like the current meter is set up to control the heaters automatically. Please post photos of the setup so we can check more deeply.

I can get you the times though! Here you go:

Thank you for posting that link, it answers my question for the timing of my hot water supply, which I program myself. I will add one hour for BST as the timer appears to be locked on winter mode.

Before I moved, I thought my flat would be using the Radio Teleswitch service, but I now think that the OVO meter box was set to turn on the Storage heaters on low rate settings. I was also planning to switch to Snug Octopus as they say they can do the switching on what appears to be version of the Economy 7 tariff. What I am now thinking (possibly a little too late!) is that the Economy 10 tariff would have been better for an evening heater boost.

I have attached a photo of my set up.

Hi @Dave-Nice-VIII , actually Octopus have a variety of tariffs that don’t depend on the meter - as long as it’s a connected smart meter. Your meter is 4 terminal so it doesn’t ‘switch’ itself but there are registers which log usage during different time slots.

For example, I have a tariff called Cosy (designed for heat pumps) which gives me off-peak rates at three points in the day :

4-7am; 1-4pm and 10pm-midnight

What you will need to sort, as you’ve discovered, is any internal time switches.

Tariff timing is as it says so mine follows changes for BST etc

Rates for Snug are regional so you will find them by entering your postcode here

Thanks. I had noticed that tariff, it looks like a useful alternative to the E-10. I guess I will need to get an electrician to install a timer, unless you think a simple timer circuit.

Best use a proper timer designed for the task as the loads it needs to switch are quite high where storage heaters are concerned

Thanks for your replies. I have now switched to  Snug Octopus, which switches on my storage heaters on an equivalent to Economy Seven.

I did so on the basis that the overnight rate was the cheapest, but I am now thinking that it might have been more prudent to stick to the Economy 10 tariff for the sake of the afternoon and evening cheap rates.

is it possible to switch back after having a smart meter installed?

If you wanted to swap back, absolutely! If you have E10 you’d need to phone OVO, but it can be done.

Hey @Dave-Nice-VIII

I’m glad to see Blastoise186 has already stopped back to advise you’ll be welcome back any time!

If you’re looking to switch back to Economy 10 after the meter exchange, it’ll be best to speak with the team.

I would advice waiting, and not switching straight away following the meter exchange as it could cause issues if the meter details aren’t updated quickly, as the full settling in process can take up to 6 weeks to complete. So I’d just make sure all of the new meter details have settled before you move back.😊

I’ve linked below to a couple of topics which might also be helpful here:
