Failed switch from THTC in Highlands

Hi, I’m struggling with a failed switch from 2 THTC meters to a single Aclara two rate TOU meter. Following the smart meter installation I have been put on Simpler Energy with a single p/kWh for both peak and off-peak. I have called OVO support 3 times to request Economy 7 tariff and each time been told that my request would be actioned. But it hasn’t been. My online account still shows Simpler Energy with a single p/kWh rate.

I’ve opened a complaint today. But the bottom line is my storage heaters are using expensive electricity and OVO don’t seem able or willing to rectify the problem they have caused.

Any advice appreciated. I bet I’m not the only one!

Thanks.

You’re in really good hands now that you’ve got the OVO experts on your case, @skyefarmer.

One thing I found slightly alarming: “Currently no storage heaters and expensive panel heating and hot water.” Without storage heaters, there’s no advantage being on a tariff like Economy 7. A panel heater really provides comfort only when it’s on; any heat it generated will dissipate very quickly unless the building is especially well insulated. On Economy 7, then, you’d be paying a significant premium to run heating equipment during the day.

One of the attractive features of THTC was the separate 24-hour ‘heating’ rate, intended to power non-storage heating equipment if the offpeak-charged storage heaters weren’t enough. I’ve not heard of anyone who’s had a smart meter installed that successfully reproduces THTC’s three-rate arrangement*. This is why many THTC refugees opted for an Economy 10 plan; it charges storage heaters up at night and boosts them twice during the day and evening. The daytime and evening slots make it possible to run both extra heating equipment and other power-hungry appliances at the lower rate.

Let’s wait and see what @Lukepeniket_OVO comes up with.

*  I don’t know that OVO have even tried, but installations by other suppliers using twin-element meters have not apparently been particularly successful.
