Engineer could not connect outside gas meter to smart meter (which controls my electricity). How to get a smart meter for gas?

I was told by the smart meter installation engineer that he could not connect my outside gas meter to my smart meter (which controls my electricity). He said I should contact Ovo about how to get a smart meter for gas. Can this be done? It is very inconvenient that I still have to submit meter readings and cannot monitor my gas usage. How can I get my gas meter connected to a smart meter? Thanks

Hi @stevekm ,

There’s options for this! Dual-Band Comms Hubs and Alt-HAN should have done it.

How far apart are the meters?

Did the engineer try to fit a gas meter, or was he only there to change the electricity meter and not even touch the gas meter?

I had similar, my old electricity meter was changed but not the gas meter, (my engineer did have both but couldn't get the new gas meter to communicate) so I was also still sending in gas readings. A few months later another engineer came with a different gas meter and that one connected sucessfully and has been working fine since.

Thanks for your replies. The engineer did try to connect the gas meter but said it did not connect. I will contact OvO and see if they can try with another smart meter, dual-band or whatever to see if that will work 🤞

@stevekm

As Blastoies186 asks - how far apart are your meters?

It might make a difference to what is needed.

For example mine are pretty close, less than 3 meters with a single layer breezeblock/render wall between. So no special kit was needed just a different gas meter.

(Or different engineer/appointment perhaps? Timeslots between customers might also come into play as to how much time can be spent trying to resolve connection problems?)

I’m very curious to hear the result! Maybe it could inspire me for the second request.
