Can the signal be checked before smart meter installation is complete?

I'm looking to fit an EV charger in the future but first have to change to Smart meters. I’ve put it off so far as I have concerns that the meters won’t be able to communicate with each other and/or externally due to their locations and hoped the technology would improve with time.

The gas meter is in the garage on the original outside wall whilst the electricity meter is in the opposite corner of the property, in an upstairs bedroom cupboard. As such there is ~12m between them, two thick brick walls, a ceiling and two wooden doors.

I had hoped that prior to the installation a signal check would be performed to check that both the HAN and WAN would work to allow the Smart meters to be ‘Smart’, not dumb. From the various posts and articles I’ve read on here this doesn’t appear to be the case with many people posting how their meters were installed but don’t communicate and they’ve had to raise this as a problem and wait for various additional aerial, boosters and extenders to be tried, with varying degrees of success. I note some comments suggest adding information and photos during the Smart meter installation booking process, but ultimately there’s no way of knowing until you try it.

Do I need to book a separate technical site assessment (at my cost) to avoid the above situation ?

Welcome @dmo ,

Please don’t book a Site Survey for this - you’ll just pay £160 for no benefit!

Checks are done during the booking process - if it shows up good there, you’ll be allowed to book. If there’s a known blocker, you won’t be able to proceed.

Which county/region are you in?

Hey @dmo

I’m glad to see our community members have already stopped by with some really helpful advice here, as Blastoise186 has mentioned, the engineer will check all of this onsite at the time of the installation. There are more potential solutions now than there used to be for range issues, so hopefully they’ll be able to get you sorted!

Do let us know how your appointment goes.🤞🏻 I’ve linked below to a helpful Forum topic just in case you’ve not managed to get booked in yet.

It’s a communicating electricity smart meter that is needed for you to have the EV charger.

Whether the gas meter communicates or not (or even whether you even have a gas meter) is irrelevant to an EV charger.

Do you have any particular reason to think that the electricity smart meter might not connect to the Wide Area Natwork (WAN)?
If not then I don’t see a signal check being needed and you should just go ahead and get the meters exchanged to smart meters.

If it should happen that the gas meter can’t connect over HAN with the Communications Hub sat on top of the electricity meter then that can be sorted out with Alt-Han.
The engineer will always try just the gas meter on it’s own first though, why fit something that isn’t needed?
If the gas smart meter can’t connect at first then you may have to keep sending in gas readings for a while, which is what you do already.

Thanks for the replies.

@ Blastoise186 - I’m near Preston, Lancashire. Do you mean external checks such as WAN connection in my area, or also internal issues regarding location ?

@Nukecad - the house is a 1930s semi-detached. The electricity meter is located tight in a corner formed by two thick brick walls (one external and one the party wall with the other semi) and close to a chimney breast, boxed inside a cupboard and I thought this may be an issue for the WAN connection. I think Winter Hill is used to connect and line of sight to this is through the property next door. Hopefully the booking process checks will consider this.

Ideally the electricity meter would be in the garage with the gas meter (this would make EV charger installation a lot easier) but I think the cost and hassle of moving it (and the consumer unit) would be significant.

Thanks for mention of Alt-Han, just been reading up on it.

Preston should be OK.

However, the best way to know is to try the install - it’s the only definitive way to be sure.

As for internals? I suspect a Dual-Band Comms Hub will likely do the trick. I wouldn’t recommend moving any meters though - it’d cost a TON for what you’re after.
