HI,

Has anyone with a u16 gas meter got a smart meter?  Interested to know if Ovo now install these.  Its a pain *edited by moderator* to remember to do manual readings…

Thanks

Morning @MJCommando, I hope you’re well.

As it stands I’m sorry to say that we don’t carry out smart meter installations currently for medium pressure (U16) gas supplies. If we ever do upgrade customers to U16 then this work is carried out by our subcontractors, who install traditional meters in this scenario, at a cost. If we take on a customer with a U16 smart meter then we currently have no way of communicating with that type of smart meter.

This may well change in the future but, unfortunately, this is the current state of affairs with U16. If you are wishing to have a smart meter installed soon then your best option would be to contact other suppliers to see if it’s something they’d be able to do for you if you switched to them. Sorry for this!

Thanks for the reply.

I Ido find this extreemly poor customer service from OVO, espeically as u16 smart metere are now available.  Its just lazy..

I’m afraid it’s not as simple as getting them in and deploying them. Fitting ANY U16 gas meters requires additional engineer training and also requires work on the suppliers side to integrate them into systems. It’s not just a case of pressing a button.

OVO will probably support them sooner or later, but they’re not ready yet.

Most enbergy suppliers dont fit their own meters, they outsource them to companies like SMS Energy.  Octopus frst installed u16 smart gas meeters several years ago and therefore if OVO wanted to OVO could of pushed to also make the switch..  OVO obvioualy made the concious decided not to and stay behind the curve on technology…

Building backend infrastructure for something as simple as meterage collection, would be easy for a company the size of OVO to do if they actually wanted to.  Like i said.. Lazy..

OVO has a more hybrid approach at the moment. They use a combination of both SMS and their own internal engineers depending on the job.

But at the moment, I’d argue they’ve got bigger issues to deal with than adding U16 support - like sorting out the RTS to Smart Migration.

After that’s done, they’ll have more time to look at other projects like Smart U16.

They should of got on with adding smart u16 support years ago..   But its clearly not a prioroty for them and theya re happy for the customer churn… Shame when your trying to stay loyal to a supplier.

They also need to sort out their EV charging tarrif for custoimers with solar… Which also they could of done by now...

To be fair, while I agree it’s not ideal to not have U16 yet… There are bigger jobs that need doing first like the RTS Migration and finishing off other migrations.

I suspect U16 is on the to-do list though but they’re not very common for domestic supplies.
