Question

Am I being scammed?

Hello. I received an email from OVO saying they think there is a problem with my gas smart metre. I assume it has been triggered by the fact our gas bill has dropped a lot. That is due to us having replaced a very poor front door where a lot of heat escaped. The thermostat was near it so it took a long time for the heat to get up to 19 degrees. Our daughter also stayed with us for a while and she would have four or five baths a week. Me and my wife just use a shower. With these two changes our bills have reduced dramatically. When I responded to the email by ringing the number given, 0330 102 7517, a message said that number no longer exists and to ring 0330 303 5063. After answering some “security” questions, including my date of birth, which I don’t remember ever telling OVO, I was put through to someone who started asking the same questions again. I then thought I was being scammed so I told the person this and hung up. How can I be sure I’m not being scammed and how can I genuinely contact OVO to check? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi @exhausted ,

All contact info can be found via this thread:

The security questions are based on things you gave OVO (and OVO gave you) when you signed up.

Lmk if you have more questions - you’re literally talking to a cybersecurity pro here! :)

Do you check your online account? Is it showing that there have been any missed readings? For instance, today, on the Home page of my online account, there is a box that looks like this. This shows the date of the last readings sent.

It looks like the first number, 0330 102 7517, belongs to the Boost Power, an OVO brand for pre-paid customers. But it also looks like not existing anymore, as I cannot find any more information. The second number, 0330 303 5063, is the current OVO’s number. It could be a genuine email, though it’s strange that they used outdated phone number. I agree with everyone here, contact OVO via phone number you can find on their website. If you are not sure about the email – don’t use any contact details from there.

Just letting ya know…

This thread has inspired a potential Idea! Feel free to check it out.

Ideas are part of the lifeblood of the OVO Forum. They’re often suggested by folks who swing by or by Forum Volunteers (like me!) when we see potentially cool things that could happen. In this case, it looks like there’s a gap in the forum content which would be cool to fill.

Got more ideas? Feel free to post them! :)

Yes I do check it regularly, and mine says exactly the same as yours. I’ve just looked again and it says “last reading :21 April   You don’t need to do anything”   Thankyou for taking the time to reply.
