Sourcing a replacement In Home Display (IHD), where to get one if mine is broken?

Hello.

I need some help please.  I have lost my old Scottish power IHD.

I have a smart meter installed by Scottish Power in 2017.  (Aclara sgm 1311 / Aclara SGC 1311) and Ive lost the IHD.

I bought a cheap secure pipit 500 from Ebay thinking it may work but I cannot get the two to pair so that's not working at all.  I cannot seem to find a pairing window on either my gas or electricity meters in order to pair to an IHD.

Is there a unit I can buy that might work?

Thanks.

Nick.

Hi - I have requested an IHD about 4 times over the last 6 months - always to be told that they don’t have any. Any ideas on what I can do about this?

Is there an alternative that I can buy myself and connect somehow?

Thanks.

Thanks for that - I’ve just been told they still don’t have any.

What can I get from an IHD that I can’t see on the website?

The ivie Bud is pretty similar to the Chameleon IHD6 and IHD7 that OVO gives out. It’s mostly intended for cases where your supplier can’t give you any.

Hi Blastoise. I’ve been having an increasingly frustrating conversation with someone on the OVO Twitter team about IHDs. My meter started life as a SMETS1 and has now been remotely upgraded to SMETS2 capable. I’d like a newer IHD since obviously the original one OVO supplied now vaguely resembles a 1970s Casio calculator in capability and function. They’re telling me that I am unable to have a new IHD as they are no longer manufactured and that should this one break I would have no IHD at all. That seems weird, and not great from a CS standpoint.

So, I am considering one of your suggested alternatives. Are you aware if the Ivie Bud gives real time usage on SMETS1->SMETS2 upgraded meters or whether only periodic data is available, like in the Loop app etc? Also, and I accept you probably have no idea on this, I see that there are 2 options with Ivie - an Ivie account or a Chameleon account if you’ve previosuly linked your SMART meter to the Samsung SmartThings app. I’m intrigued to try the SmartThings option until the Ivie arrives but don’t know if it could cause issues somehow? Have you heard of any in your research?

Thanks for your time.

Hey @GrumpyTrucker ,

Sure thing. Both the ivie Bud and Hildebrand Glow IHD are capable of real-time data on the IHD itself. The companion apps will also have that functionality as long as you’re also using their IHD or CAD devices. Both are compatible with S1 meters that have been migrated to DCC - I tend to refer to them as S1+ because they’ll never be true S2.

Apps like Loop however, are unable to pull constant real-time data in most cases due to DCC restrictions.

Using the SmartThings Energy route until your ivie Bud arrives won’t cause issues. It’ll just get upgraded once the ivie Bud is commissioned and activated.

It is true that the Secure Pipit 500 is no longer manufactured and OVO can’t get hold of it anymore. There’s nothing OVO can do about that sadly.

Thanks @Blastoise186 that's very helpful. Good to know that the real time usage works with them.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't asking OVO for a new Pipit - awful thing - but she was essentially telling me that I cannot have a new IHD of any variety even if this old one fails. Which, considering I can buy an Ivie that would work, makes no sense. I'm sure their newer Chameleon IHD would work fine but it's like they're just going "Yeah, you've been a customer for a while, we don't need to try very hard. And besides it's not like you can go anywhere else is it?" at us.

I'll get an Ivie ordered then once I've been paid again in a couple of weeks. Thanks again.

That’s the catch. The only Chameleon IHD that OVO can get for your meters is the Chameleon IHD6-CAD-PPMID-S1 and those things are literally gold dust!

OVO is able to get hold of those, but has to prioritise giving them to Boost PAYG customers who absolutely have to have a PPMID (Prepayment Meter Interface Device) in order to top-up properly.

@Blastoise186 Does seem odd in a way that, should mine fail, they’d leave me without an IHD when they could at least maybe offer to partly subsidise an Ivie for example. Or at least suggest that such an option exists, rather than just say “yeah, no IHD at all for you.”

I do notice with interest that the Chameleon IHD7 looks almost exactly like the Ivie Bud. To the point I think they’re maybe the same device.

I’ll pass the feedback on.

And yes, they are almost identical :)

I have an Aclara 1311 smart Meter serial no 17M1052804. The IHD is an old SSE one which is showing highly inaccurate usage/costs. It is electricity only as no gas here.

Ovo have tried to refresh the connection, remotely, between the IHD and the meter  which hasn’t worked. They tell me I need a replacement but there is no stock of compatible IHD’s as the manufacturer has stopped producing them.

Can I buy pretty much any smart meter and use it with the Aclara?

Many thanks

Jane

Hi @janemac ,

I’m having the same issue and found this topic. I think the guide @Blastoise186 Blastoise186 is referring to is in the reply, but it’s not obvious because of the way the forum formats things. If you click on where it says “Sourcing a replacement In Home Display (IHD), where to get one if mine is broken?” it should take you there, or at least it does for me. Or maybe try:

https://forum.ovoenergy.com/smart-meters-136/sourcing-a-replacement-in-home-display-ihd-where-to-get-one-if-mine-is-broken-10502

I’m just reading the guide myself now.

If it was installed in 2017, it’s almost certainly SMETS1. Show me photos though if you’re OK with that. I’ll be able to verify.

If you’d rather not do that, I’ve got other options.

Yup, that’s a SMETS1 Aclara there!

Fab. I see you are recommending a Hildebrand Glow Display CAD for a SMETS 1 Aclara. I note that these are dual fuel IHD’s and I am electricity only, Is his still my best/only option?

thanks Jane

Yup, that’ll work just fine. If the Hildebrand Glow IHD detects you are electric only, it’ll automatically to electric only mode by itself. You won’t need to do anything special to make that happen.

Don’t worry, I’m friendly with Hildebrand and I’ve spoken to them several times about similar things! They’ll make sure it’ll work before they take your money!

Is anyone else having a problem getting a replacement for a broken ihd from Ovo?

I contacted Ovo in February and was told there was no stock! I waited till September to contact them again and they said I would get one in a few weeks!  I  am still waiting!  They are not answering my emails now!!

Does anyone know if I can just buy an off the shelf ihd which will be compatible, and  is it easy to link up (I’m not very technical) and if so how I would go about doing that.

I feel really let down by Ovo regarding this and their inability to supply me something which made me switch over to them in the first place!

Thanks

Hey @Maggie76 ,

Unfortunately getting hold of S1 IHDs is a nightmare for all suppliers, not just OVO. It wouldn’t have mattered what supplier you went with, you’d have the same problem. I can promise you this right now. OVO didn’t deliberately let you down. It was at most, just an unlucky scenario. You should never rely on things like being able to get a particular IHD as the sole reason for going with Supplier X. It may come back to bite you later if you do.

Stocks of the old Secure Pipit 500 are basically depleted at this point. Secure doesn’t really make them anymore either, so it’s impossible to get them.

Chameleon makes S1 Compatible IHDs, but they’re also gold dust because literally everyone is trying to get hold of them.

Here’s my meter and here’s my display, the display doesn’t show me daily usage but does tell me an estimated bill. Any ideas how I get it to update on to the display? Or if in all honesty it’s an old display what would you recommend as a replacement to suit my meter?

many thanks Dan.waddy
