Are there conditions to the free electricity offer?

I opted in for free electricity last Sunday, but OVO said I hadn't. Are there conditions?

Hey @Vickiplum,

To clarify, are you referring to the free electricity offer for Beyond customers via the app, or are you asking about the new reward system being tested for Power Move Flex trial participants, where you can earn up to 2 hours of free electricity?

You can’t see previous slots but you can see upcoming slots on the app. I’ve left a screenshot of this below:

You can also find more information on our tour of Beyond below of what other offers are available

I hope this helps!

Look at your Free Electricity previous slots list on your OVO Energy App, it would show there if you had selected actual slot.

I don’t understand what’s gone wrong if you’ve picked dated you chosen you’re asked to confirm & get a reminder on the chosen day

When I choose my free 1KWh free hours on the App I get reminders ch to pick my time, unfortunately I don’t get an option to choose the day, when my chosen hour is approaching. I also put in my phone diary. & msg my partner the dates so we’re on same page.  Usually we do a wash in the machine and if Sunday we may put oven on and start the meat cooking for dinner but in summer we don’t do a roast every wk.

Tbh it’s a lot of faff for 21p approx cost of 1kwh  so 42p a week. My quick brain calculation £1.68 pm + vat £1.74 pm. It’s not worth the worry if it does go wrong. I know that I would start an appliance at the stated time of free electricity & it wasn’t registering at correct time on my daily breakdowns I guess my smartphone signals out of sync. I can’t be bothered to do anything as at end of day I haven’t been charged more than I’d have used anyway.
I hope you get your misunderstanding dealt with. I find customer services are very helpful when you contact

Good Luck.

Not wasting time trying to reshuffle my electricity usage for a few pence. If I use any in one of the given slots so be it.

Drat!  I opted for free lekky tonight from 9-10pm… planning to stack the dishwasher, washing machine with the past two days’ crud, and, having turned off the heating/hot water  storage tank timeswitch yesterday, planning a whoof tonight before shower day tomorrow…  Then ‘er indoors diaries a visit to geriatric, needy friends early evening and a slap up meal out later.  So here’s my dillemma; do I save a few bob (and the Planet) by turning her dow? Thus alienating old friends and worse, the love of my life…? And don’t talk about programmable timeswitches… me ‘ouse ain’t got Smart kontrolz and at my age I can barely see the antique digital timeswitch in the airing cupboard, let alone work out how to change it!

It's not like winning the lottery saving a few bob on Power Shift. Go out and enjoy not saving the planet ot one night.

Preserve the domestic harmony.

Think how much energy you have saved at home by going out and not having to cook.

That's saved you a few bob - or not if you are paying for the meal out. 😀

Free electricity is a misnomer. I couldn’t understand why I wasn't getting it. When I looked into it,  I am not shifting enough electricity to qualify. I might have got 1/2 an hour if I had opted in to every event, but at such short notice this wasn't possible. As a low user I would never qualify for 2 hours anyway. OVO need to re-word 'free electricity' or highlight the t's and c's.

Completely agree @Vickiplum. At best it’s x1 kWh free per hour time slot chosen but if you are a low user or have solar panels/battery storage it’s very little gain if any.

Power Move Flex and the two free hours per week are two different trials. You don't have to opt in to the two free hours, you just have to select which of the available hours you want, on the app, each week. Shifting electricity is the Power Move Flex, which you do have to opt into each time when you receive an email about a power move up or down . Which are you asking about?

There are 3 separate events;

To receive your 2 free hours of electricity you have to pick your hours every week using the app. You get up to 1kw per hour.

With Power Move you avoid using electricity during set hours, which are currently 5 - 7pm. You receive entries into a prioze draw based on the percentage you move .

With Power Move Flex they let you know when they want you to use or avoid using electricity for one hour, I receive an email each evening and have to opt in.

Well l don’t opt in every time because sometimes l am not home or at work so can’t do  it all the time l don’t earn anything for Sundays as l am working so l miss out my free usage which l am guessing you don’t get back. well not the end of the world.

I have picked my 2 hours when I have rem red in time. 2 things puzzle me, though. Does the smart meter display recognise it as I can't see any difference? It still seems to be showing electricity being charged during those hours. Also, how is it shown (if at all) on the bill so I can see if it is being applied?

I'm not one of the people who spends hours studying the meter/readings/etc. Life's too short and it's all so complicated but I'd like to know how to tell if the system is working. Thanks

Even by simply opting for 2 hours of free electricity you still get a credit.  It's small but non the less its a credit.

I was away for one week, opted for my 2 hours free and got the credit...

You haven’t said how much credit - the full 2 units for 2 hours?

I tried doing it and got credited with 4p.

I got £1.00

I find it all too complicated. I try to opt in to everything available but still get nothing. It's not worth the effort frankly.

Hi @Topsy, your in home display won’t know anything about which particular hour(s) you’ve chosen that week, so you're absolutely correct in your first question: your hour(s) will show as being charged as normal for any electricity you use.  However, come your next bill (or possibly the bill following that one!) we come to the second of your questions:  there’ll be at least one line saying “Beyond - 2 hours free electricity” showing a credit in your bill, amounting to a rebate for the electricity your meter registered during your claimed hour(s).  Up to the allowed maximum of 1kWh per hour.

So your meter, like Basil Fawlty’s hapless Manuel, knows nothing at the time about any “free” electricity, but the usage is eventually credited on your next bill(s).

It’s not a fortune, adds up to a maximum possible of around 2 quid a month if you’re really accurate and tweak your usage perfectly, but it’s welcome nonetheless!  Finishes end of August, though, so only six slots left to claim…

EDIT forgot to say, you can check in the Beyond app and see any upcoming slots that you’ve booked, and you can also see every previous slot you’ve ever booked.

Thanks for your explanations. It was, as if assumed, that the display wouldn't be aware of the free time and that there ought to have been something on my bill indicating a rebate. However I've not found anything yet. I'm a single household and low user generally but I have tried to shift what usage I can to those hours. I'll have to check next bill carefully.

The various credits show at the bottom of your billing under ‘Other Charges’.

You can see here that this month I have £1.20 credit from the Beyond Free hours, and £2.00 credit from the standard Power Move draw.
(They show as a minus figure because they are credits so deducted from your total bill):

PS. The other two for Beyond and Power Move Subscription that both show ‘£0.00’ are just there to show you joined in those promotions and that it cost you nothing to join. (They have to be there for VAT/accounting, but you can ignore them).

I wonder if the Beyond rewards people have fallen into the same trap as the Power Move people did a couple of years ago. If I check the difference between the Total cost figure and the VAT base one (‘5% of ...’), it’s the value of my ‘2 hours of free electricity.’ So this credit reduces the amount of VAT I’m charged. This may be intentional, although the placeholder lines below the rewards would suggest that both ‘free electricity’ and PM credits are not supposed to alter the VAT payable.

It comes down to what the price of 1 kWh is. Has anyone managed to work that out (e.g. from the amount of electricity used and the reward earned)?

It should be possible using the hours that you picked and then the half-hourly metered usage for those hours, (assuming you can work out just which days/hours the credit is for).
Then applying your tariff unit rate. Should be easier with a fixed tariff.(Try it both with and without VAT?).

I may have a go later when I have more time.
I’m thinking a spreadsheet may be best.
