Strange pending transaction showing on my bank account following Amazon outage?

I topped up my gas and electricity through the OVO app yesterday, I had text and email confirmation, the top-ups were displayed in the app and the credit was applied to my meters.

What's strange is i checked my bank account this morning and there are two pending payments to Northern Belle 0330 303 5063 GB.

The payments are for the exact amount of my Ovo top ups and I believe 0330 303 5063 is an Ovo phone number. Why do the payments have Ovo's phone number and a completely different company name? Should I be concerned about this?

I was going to raise these payments as fraudulent with my bank, but if they decide I'm making a false claim, they could close my account.

I topped up again this morning and the pending payments are to Ovo Energy Ltd. Can anyone shed some light on this, please?

Hey @AlienDonkey,

Welcome to the community,

Blastoise mentioned that there was a big internet outage recently, which caused some issues for banks and online services. This might be the reason for what you're experiencing. If the payments match the top-up payments you've made recently, there's really no need to stress. Just keep an eye on your account! Remember, pending transactions aren’t finalised until they show up on your statement, so there’s still time for everything to get sorted out.

If you have any more questions or concerns, feel free to reach out!

Hi @AlienDonkey ,

I’d say let them stand for now - it could just be all the AWS chaos recently messing with stuff.

As long as the top-up worked that’s the most important thing.

The pending payments have now cleared and the name against the payments is HTTPS://OvoEnergyP.

Perhaps someone from Ovo would please be kind enough to explain exactly why the pending payments had the name Northern Belle, rather than Ovo. This doesn't make any sense and I'd love to hear the reason for it.

Just a suggestion: in future all payments should be made to Ovo, not some random obscure company. By the way, Northern Belle is the name of a luxury train operator, so you can understand my confusion.

It was almost certainly a cosmetic/visual glitch caused by the recent Internet chaos. The payment went directly to OVO in the first place. Its beyond OVO’s control.

It has clearly self-corrected. I wouldn't worry about it now.

I’d say that question is a case of barking up the wrong tree.

OVO have no way of knowing why your Bank’s computer had the wrong name for a while.

Only your bank would be able to answer that. (If they even know why).

TBH though they will most likely tell you the same as above; ie that it was caused by “A small naming glitch in the computer system, probably due to the global AWS outage.”

The payment was always going to the account where it should, and the naming error got correced.
Nothing more is needed.
