Last night (6th Nov 2025) I noticed that over £100 credit suddenly appeared on my pay as you go smart meter, I certainly didnt add this credit and I have had no communication saying it was a goverment thing or anything like that, has this happenned to anyone else or does someone know why this has happened?

It will be the Warm Home Discount and you will (should) get a separate letter about it from the Government.

However the Post is much slower  to deliver letters than computers are to put the credit on your meter or account.

I got my £150 WHD credited to my account a full 7 days before the Government letter came through my door.

PS. If you have a ‘traditional’ PAYG meter rather than a Smart PAYG meter then they will usually send you 1 or more vouchers so that you can top up your key/card at the shops.

Full Warm Home Discount details can be found on our website here, and in this Forum topic:

This has happened to me as well! My smart meter showed the message "Your top up was successful, when I pressed "OK" it showed £195!! I looked at it flabbergasted! I didn't put that on! Is this some kind of scam? I had £40-something on it already so someone has added around £150! No advance warning that this was going to happen. I've had no letter. What the hell is going on?

Because I haven't got my Customer Ref number to hand I can't contact Ovo customer support straightaway to find out what this is about! I have to look for it.

I did actually google what I could and it said it could be the warm home discount from the government which ovo are involved in, it automatically goes on as credit between october and Jan and to those who are eligable such as claiming pension credit, housing benefit and other benefints excluding PIP. So Im hoping this is what it is as I have had no letters about it at all.

I contacted Ovo and ommunicated with an advisor via their webchat, they said it was a :warm home discount" paid by the government. I guess I've received it because of my age.

I'm receiving a benefit, but it's UC so I didn't think I would be eligible.

They keep moving the goalposts, but a lot more people became eligible this winter:

Warm Home Discount Scheme: If you’re on a low income in England and Wales - GOV.UK

A nice little bonus for you and others in the same situation 🙂

It is, I believe, also important to stress that the money does not come from the government - the WHD is one of the things that our standing charges pay for - the only input from government is that they tell our energy companies who to pay!!
