Question

Moving Prepayment smart meter accounts to new home..

Hi,

Apologies if this question has been asked before.…

I am due to move to a new flat in the very-near future.

Both myself and the current occupier have Ovo Prepayment smart meters ( topped up by phone).

How do I go about transferring my account from my home to the new flat, and what will happen to the credit currently remaining?

It seems it should be an easy migration, but these things rarely are!

All help will be appreciated.

Regards,

Tom

You can’t transfer an account like that, the correct procedure is:

When the current tenant moves out they should close their account.

When you move in you close your account at your old property and set up a new on at the new property.

Any credit remaining on your old account should be refunded. by a cheque to your new address.

You should make at least a note of the meter readings, a photo would be better, both on the meter where you move out and the one where you move in.
With smart meters they should be recorded automatically, but it’s best to have photo evidence too just in case.

If there is a ‘void’ period - between the previous tenant leaving and closing their account and you moving in and opening opening a new one- then the standing charges and any energy used during that void period are legally the landlords responsibility.

Here are guides on moving home (the second on is specifically for pre-payment meters).

I shall look at the tutorials later and take on board what you have said.
