Switching to a Economy 7 (two rate) plan - how can I arrange this with OVO?

Hello,

Is it currently possible to switch to an economy 7 tariff with OVO? I’m struggling to find any recent information about this as it seems like everything has come to a standstill with the impending October energy price rise.

Thanks.

Hey @Adamamin,

Welcome to the OVO Online Community!

We don't currently have the capability to change smart meters from Single Rate to Economy 7, or vice versa. If this capability ever becomes available we’ll update the Forum accordingly so that everyone’s aware.

If you have a single-rate meter, you probably won't benefit from an Economy 7 tariff. This tariff offers a cheaper rate for off-peak hours but has a higher rate during peak hours. It is meant for users who use a lot of energy at night, especially those with storage heaters or immersion heaters that run overnight. If you don’t have these types of heaters and mostly use energy during the day, Economy 7 is likely not a good option for you.

If a customer has an Economy 7 meter and is not using enough energy during off peak hours, we can switch them to a single rate plan. This is common when customers have removed their storage heaters.

You can find out more about Economy 7 here:

I can only give you my experience. After many years on a 2 meter set up (with2 standing charges). 1 meter on standard rate and 1 on E10, both hade to have various fixed rate agreements over the the years. This year in Jan at contract end OVO said they could no longer support this. They then put both meters on a standard variable rate with no offer of E7 let alone E10. After weeks of live chat with no resolution in sight I raised a formal complaint. The complaint handler was brilliant. We agreed removal of old meters, replacement with a single 5 port smart meter on dual rate (E7) and removal of second standing charge. This duly happened and installation went ahead. They installed it as a single rate meter with no switching to port 5 for the heating circuits! More interaction with complaints department who hassled non stop on my behalf until meter was reprogrammed with dual rate and bridging to port 5 active during E7 hours so my heating would work. This took from mid Jan to end Oct to finally sort!

Thank you for sharing your experience @Ovouser777, I’m sorry it wasn’t a good one.

Customers with ‘exotic’ meter types like Economy 10 can now get quotes for tariffs from OVO. However, if a customer wants to switch from single rate to Economy 7 there is still an issue.

Seems like the usual corporate “sorry we can’t help you”shambles !

I can't even get an answer to why Economy 7 is not available alongside anytime charging for my EV charger and my Home Heat Pump !

Come on OVO the questions and queries above have been going on for nearly 2 years (in a few cases ) and still no clear way forward !

OVO and Kawzula (tech support) can’t even get two EV smart chargers to work on one account - Please do something about this ……..

I have an electric boiler running radiators and an immersion heater in my 3 bed house.  It is controlled by a Hive app. I have a smart meter. What would be the best tariff?

I have electric storage heating which runs on the economy 7 tarriff. While this works well for this type of electric heating you may now be better off looking at a single tariff across the day. There are so many plans now its hard to say which is best. You will need to work out the usage and times when you use the most energy. Remember if you go for a dual tarriff such as ecomony 7 or 10 the daytime rates are a little higher. Your usage pattern may help point you in the direction of the best tarriff.

Afternoon @Spudtm, I hope you’re well.

Welcome to the OVO Forum! @DavidWSR is correct on what they’re saying about economy 7. Having an economy 7 plan means you’ll have a cheaper off-peak rate for the storage heating. What sort of plan are you on at the moment? Does your meter currently record peak and off-peak readings?

Thank you for your replies. The property does not have storage heaters.  The electric boiler heats the radiators and the immersion tank.

Hey @Spudtm,

Have you thought about how you use energy throughout your day, as @DavidWSR mentioned? There are some great tariffs out there that offer both peak and off-peak rates. If you can shift most of your energy usage to the off-peak times, you could save quite a bit! But if you prefer a simpler approach, a single-rate tariff might be the way to go—it has the same rate all day, making it easy to manage your energy use.

Just a heads-up though - your meter will already need to be giving us both day and night readings and be configured for Economy 7 before you could move to one of these plans. If the meter hasn’t then you’d need to stay on a single rate plan and we can offer energy saving tips based on this.

Hopefully you find this useful and if you’ve any follow up questions please let us know.

I have a SMETS2 meter and a 10 kWh Fox ESS battery. Phone support told me I can't switch to Economy 7, but I would like for winter grid-charging. Can a forum moderator help me push through a remote profile class change(i belive this is what its called?)? Also once im in economy 7, are there specific tariffs that would work with a 10KW battery setup?

Many Thanks

Raf

Hey @livingthedream

I’m glad to hear you’ve already reached out to the Support Team about this and they gave you the correct advice on this. We don't currently have the capability to change smart meters from Single Rate to Economy 7, or vice versa. If this capability ever becomes available we’ll update the Forum accordingly so that everyone’s aware. You can find out more about this on our topics below:

If Economy 7 is something you really think you’ll benefit from, it might be worth having a shop around with other suppliers to see if they can offer that switch for you.

Sorry it’s not the answer you were looking for here.
