new Solar PV and battery system - should I stay with OVO

I'm having a new solar system installed next week. The system will give me 7.84 kW peak generating power and my DNO have approved ma  11 kW production and potential for 7 kW export to grid.  My current OVO supply contract (electricity only) is a simple fixed rate until 13th June.  I've heard Octopus are the best supplier for solar + battery systems, but having looked at what OVO are offering me I can't see any plans that suit my needs.  Are there any and where can i find details?

Also, I want to applyfor a SEG but i figure this will be best done after a new flexible supply agreement from either OVO or Octopus has been established.

Any guidance from forum members with experience in these matters would be appreciated.

We’ve had solar since 2012 and batteries added later the same decade.

Initially our supply was with OVO but our main problem was that we couldn’t get an off-peak tariff due to OVO’s billing issue with previous single tariff meters.

We had no problem with solar + OVO but did switch to get a time of use (tou) tariff elsewhere.

You should calculate your various energy needs, solar generation potential and export potential to see what best fits your expectations

Hi @BPLightlog , thank you for your reply.  Was the limitation you had with OVO's billing and single tarrif meters overcome with another supplier having a more flexible approach to billing (with single tariff meters) or did you have an upgrade to your meter sometime in the last 14 years, which made finding suitable suppliers easier.

Is your current supplier offering you all the flexibility you need, if so would you mind saying who it is?

Given yesterday's announcement re EON and OVO the choice of suppliers is getting smaller!!

Hi @Corgimajor , I did not have to change the meter (it had already been updated to a 2nd gen smart meter by OVO) or anything else, as others, (I chose Octopus) simply use the half hour records from the smart meter to calculate billing. This is something that OVO currently don’t appear to be able to do.

I don’t know if the announcement with E.On and OVO will change things but it is all about the ability to track and calculate a tariff which might have a series of levels.

For a while we used their Agile tariff which changes every half hour (advised around 4pm on the previous day) but everyone in the household needs to understand the various times to use / not to use grid energy to make this work.

We had a heat pump installed just over a year ago and now we use their Cosy tariff which has dedicated off-peak slots at 4-7am, 1-4pm and 10pm to midnight. You can also use those slots to charge batteries if required.
