New account website in beta

I fell over a new version of the account website this morning, having followed a link in a banner that read:

You're in an older version of the site. Switch over to beta to see new features and updates.

I’ve only had the briefest of looks around, so I haven’t really formed an opinion about it yet. I must say, though, that the new site isn’t at all repellent!

I’ve started this thread in the hope that those who try out the new site will come here and share their feedback about it. Since we’re all getting used to the threaded version of the community forum, I’d suggest that:

  • If you’re posting about a specific feature or aspect of the site, if there’s a loose floating Reply box at the foot of the window, use that. Start your post with a brief heading - e.g. Meter readings - and use the option on the Styles menu in the editor box to format it as a Small heading. This might help keep the feedback a bit more organized.
  • If you want to comment on a topic that someone else started, use the Reply button at the foot of the post you want to comment on.

There are no restrictions on feedback (other than keep it clean, of course). With any luck, we can collectively influence the site’s designers to make it even better.

The beta version of the website is at https://myaccount.ovoenergy.com. Happy hunting!

Billing details

This title doesn’t seem to appear at the new site, but the layout of the billing details for the current and previous periods look to be identical. It’s just the URLs that have changed:

  • myaccount.ovoenergy.com/bills/charges/2026-07-01
  • myaccount.ovoenergy.com/bills/charges/current-billing-period

compared with

  • account.ovoenergy.com/billing-details/79
  • account.ovoenergy.com/billing-details

79 is simply a serial number: July was the 79th billing period since my account migrated to the Orion system. I wonder if this heralds a change in billing periods, all to the calendar month.

Pain points:

  1. Refer to my earlier comments about precision and presentation of numerical data. All the monetary values on the page are in £, with the exception of the unit rates which have a ‘p’ appended to signify pence. The page would be so much easier to scan if all those £ signs were taken away; if necessary, a note near the top could explain that sums are given in £.

Just for fun, here’s a Charges breakdown with tabular numerals and far fewer £ signs:

  2. Balance charges [sic]
I hope this is just a typo for Balance changes.

We got rid of In and Out to distinguish between credits and charges some time ago. Now they’re back. I don’t think many customers would be misled by plus and minus signs - the balance goes up with a plus and down with a minus.
It’s good to see that we’re not likely to see the ‘balance + – charges’ silliness like we had to contend with when coloured boxes showed the four elements of the balance calculation.

  3. [Missing] Meter readings
The Charges  breakdown card shows the usage figures from which the costs figures are derived. We’ve always been able to coordinate usage with the underlying readings, but they’re not there now. We have to toggle backwards and forwards between this page and the Meter readings page to check.

I hope this is another feature that’s not quite ready yet. More sinisterly, this could presage the introduction of smart time-of-use tariffs which don’t depend on readings.

  4. Daily consumption charges
This long table reproduces the Month tab of the Usage pages, but with yet another variation in precision. It seems bizarre to take a figure with three decimals, round it  to two and then present it with 0 as the third decimal. I’d suggest that it’s just not necessary on this page, but a note could direct customers to the Month usage page instead once its presentation has been sorted out.

This table is missing the reverse order functionality present on the Usage pages.

  5. Download link
I see a button labelled Download PDF summary when the ‘bill’ is available. For me, ‘summary’ is a misnomer - this is simply the monthly Statement of Account. I’d suggest renaming ‘summary’ as ‘statement’, if ‘bill’ isn’t good enough.

A bit higher up in this thread, I remarked that ‘the arithmetic works now’ on the billings details page. That was referring to the fact that using the rounded/truncated figures displayed at the old site, the ‘consumption x unit rate’ calculation was imprecise by ±1p. Nit-picking, but even so.

🪳Bug

In the post just above this one, I showed off a bit of the billing details page to illustrate tabular numerals. I now see that the arithmetic doesn’t work here! The last two amounts shown:

  • 2 days x 46.92p = 93.84p ≠ £1.41
  • 22 days x 51.05p = 102.10p ≠ £11.74

Each line is a day short.

[I had in fact already noticed the 2 days, because there are two lines following a tariff change on 4 August. So there should have been 3 days at the old rate, not 2. I had decided not to mention it, because the difference (51.05 - 46.92) x 1.05 =  4.33p is totally insignificant for the customer. Multiplied by 2/3 of 4 million customers, though, it could be £12,000 -  a whole old age pension!]

This has been an incredible thread - so thanks again @Firedog

Just wanted to share an update from our internal engineering team:

  • Favicon issue is now fixed!
  • Your feedback around ‘Usage’ and ‘Account Selector’ have been noted and taken on board - the team will be looking into this over next - hopefully with some results or updates in the next quarter.

Please keep the feedback, ideas and suggestions coming - we love hearing from our customers and the community!

I'm not lazy, I'm just in energy saving mode!

Thanks, @Bradley_OVO

Perhaps we should distinguish between ‘cosmetic’ flaws and ‘nice to have’ features on the one hand and downright bugs on the other. I accept the long lead-in time for ‘nice-to-have’ stuff, even to the point of resigning myself to the fact that it probably won’t materialize in this lifetime. Bugs (like 22 x 0.5105 = 11.74) should be pushed to Priority 0 (if that means ‘immediately if not sooner - schemes differ).

Usage data

I was going to leave it to @Nukecad to dissect the usage pages, but since he’s still not using the OVO APIs to get accurate usage data for further analysis, I’m going to deliver a new

💐 Bouquet

for having - I hope - laid the UTC/BST ghost to rest. I wrote about the Summertime issue at length a few years ago. A year or two later, the site engineers dealt with the problem by inventing a new dataset to deliver JSON for the website. The new set, for each day, started in Summertime at 23:00 the previous evening to give ‘local’ timings - i.e. in BST.  This seems to have been abandoned, so that now the page takes the proper data - midnight to midnight UTC all year round - but presents them midnight to midnight BST. Best of all worlds, whose first big test will come on  25 October when BST ends.

I called up the half-hourly JSON data for 25 August from both the old and new sites. Here are the first few nodes for comparison:
