Why don't we have a visual video guide for the 20-digit Kaifa meter entry?

Related products:OVO Help

I wanted to start a discussion regarding the user experience when the smart network drops out or an In-Home Display (IHD) fails, forcing Pay As You Go (PAYG) customers to manually enter a 20-digit UTRN sequence directly onto a Kaifa smart meter.

As many here probably know, the Kaifa meter only has a two-button interface (K1 and K2). Navigating a multi-layered menu and cycling through numbers from 0 to 9 twenty consecutive times is an incredibly tedious, repetitive, and error-prone process. If a customer overshoots a digit or misses a slot in the dark, they often have to start the entire sequence from scratch. When a household is completely off-supply (without power), this is an immensely stressful experience.

While OVO has written help articles on this topic, text-based guides can be incredibly difficult to follow under stress or for visual learners. Other energy suppliers have recognised this major pain point. For instance, EDF Energy created a very simple, clear YouTube video walkthrough that explicitly shows a customer how to use the buttons to log their code.

Could the OVO content and digital experience teams consider producing a similar, brief video guide for our YouTube channel?

A quick, highly visible video tutorial would:
- Dramatically reduce anxiety for off-supply PAYG customers trying to get their lights back on.
- Deflect a massive volume of stressful emergency calls away from OVO's phone lines during network outages.
- Provide a highly shareable, accessible asset that community members and support staff can instantly link to.

I think this would be a massive, low-cost win for customer service accessibility. What does everyone else think? If you've struggled with a Kaifa meter top-up in the past, please upvote this post so the Community Managers can flag it to the product team!

    Hi @OVO not fit

That's a really good idea. Is there already a video for the Kaifa meter because a meter is a meter irrespective of who supplied it? If there isn't a video guide it could be useful for those who have a smart phone or laptop that is working independently of power and WiFi.

Another approach might be to make sure people also have access to the UTRN process in a printed or handwritten form as a back up plan. And a working torch.

I agree and support your post but I would suggest it's a multilayered approach should the customer not have access to a video resource when needed. My experience is that people don't prepare for failure of their intended back up plan even if they bother in the first place.

A further useful addition would be a simple flow chart rather than the text-based instructions we currently have. In a multi-cultural society the format provided by OVO seems very lazy. I am an educator and it takes quite a short time to produce helpful upgrades on the current - as I say - lazy approach.

I spent part of my electronics career designing state machines and developing computer languages to run them. Flow charts work well when you have a linear rather than looping structure for people not used to using them. You are going to have either a very long, repetitious chart or one with a loop (entering the digits) in it which can confuse people but your suggestion could help.

When you say lazy, energy suppliers have a lot of different tasks to perform to ensure that they are able to supply the energy you expect to receive, at a rate within the cap and not go bust in the process. I'm sure there are lots of things they can do to help the customer a bit more but if it's on a todo list and it's near the bottom (or not on it at all) then these things don't get done with limited resources compared to those things that are mandated by Ofgem. It's easy to criticise.

The volunteers on here try to help out in these situations and if, with your educator skills, you think you know of a better way of doing things then why not submit a blog item (create a PDF and post it on here) on how you would do it to assist those who need it the most. I would think you would need to consider the format based on someone not accessing it on line, perhaps doesn't have a smart phone or laptop and doesn't have a printer. Or you could provide different levels of presentation based on having some or all of those facilities. As an example, if you only have a desktop computer and your power is off then you won't have any WiFi for it.

I'm sure the other volunteers on here would be happy to test out your ideas for different scenarios and provide feedback.

Well I have a jpeg of my flow chart but the system here does not want to load it. It’s rather typical of my general feelings on OVO. Many of the energy companies actually do make an effort but sadly OVO is not one of those. My format could easily be included in one of those text-heavy guides that OVO provide. A simple video is really easy to produce. It’s hardly rocket science yet seems to evade those at OVO. They could even plagiarise the one EDF have produced.

JPEGs are still banned - see @Blastoise186’s later post. You should be able to attach a PDF, so convert your JPEG to PDF and try again ...

Uploading may be the current PHP issue which will get resolved or it may be because you are new to the forum and there are restrictions on what you can do in the early posts. I'll tag @Chris_OVO to see what that might be.

    Hi @Peter E @OVO not fit ,

I can confirm that the ability to upload files is currently temporarily disabled by the Forum Provider, Gainsight, due to the PHP security incident this week in order to protect the platform from abuse.

From what I understand, it should be back soon once Gainsight is satisfied that it’s safe to re-enable but the reason it’s currently off is because the bugs in question specifically relate to file uploads.

In the meantime, feel free to email images to forum@ovoenergy.com as the Forum Moderators can still check them out there and (hopefully) upload them for you once the feature is back online. You can monitor progress via https://status.insided.com/incidents/2d0ygy6fqd62 until then if you’d like to.

    Hiya!

As of 5am this morning, file uploads for all supported file types have been re-enabled globally. Please try them again. However, just a heads up that the OVO Forum only allows images for most users - only a Super User or the Forum Moderators can upload other types.

Give it another go now - it should work!
