Smart meters with bluetooth and broadband connectivity.

If smart meters had broadband WiFi capability, it might help in areas of poor 4G signal. As a backup, the meters should have Bluetooth connectivity too, so that in the last resort we can report our readings via the app/Bluetooth without having to grovel in dark places where the meters are installed.

Hiya!

I’m really sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this isn’t ever going to happen or be possible I’m afraid. It was once considered, but the NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre) banned it because Smart Meters are considered Critical National Infrastructure which cannot be allowed to access the public Internet.

As a result, the chances of this Idea being implemented are, unfortunately, impossible.

Sorry about this.

Do many IHDs display actual meter readings @Blastoise186 ?@Blastoise186 ? Rather than usage.

Any of the 3rd party ones like

It’s a fair enough idea given the issues with some meters and connectivity, @Nickcyclist - thanks for sharing.

It doesn’t sit within the remit of OVO Ideas, so there isn’t a product team that we work with here that can consider this for their road maps. So I’ll be marking this ideas as closed for now. But it’s useful to have something like this remaining to host discussion on the idea.

Hey Blastoise,

Can you provide any reference for the NCSC banned requirement.

Given the time of year, I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to get that info any faster than you can via the NCSC.
