There are quite a few queries that ultimately relate to smart meter reading frequency.

It would be great if there was an easy self service way via the app and website to change the smart meter reading frequency

Monthly

Daily

Hourly

Half Hourly

This would quickly resolve quite a few different types of query and free up the OVO Support Team for more important issues?

That would actually be pretty neat. I can’t believe I never thought of that one before!

I can’t believe this isn’t already an option as standard with OVO!

It’s only because neither me nor anyone else on the forum has thought of recommending it. :)

Shhh don’t tell anyone, but I have the option (30 minutes, daily, monthly) on my account page with a supplier that we dare not speak its name. Option is greyed out for me as I’m on a time of use tariff that requires 30 minute readings.

Yep this sounds like a very sensible way to reduce contact to our Support team. I’ll change this idea to ‘Open for votes’ to gauge demand and our Product team will update me in due course.

So in the meantime, I have to call Ovo to get the reporting rate changed?

@Tim_OVO any update on when this might be available?

a very good idea.

Currently somebody switched my account from monthly to daily and currently no response from CS .

I understood that it is definitely customer choice on Smart meter reads so let’s have exactly that.

@sb3000

It is currently up to customers.

Just for information for others

The powers given to ofgem by the government are now daily by default, 30min by default from 2025. Of course the powers may change to make 30min readings mandatory.

We are seeing a lot more time of use tariff and all suppliers will have to offer them which will require 30min readings.

There is currently the National Grid Demand Flexibility Scheme that requires 30min readings that can save you money if you were invited by your energy company or signed up to one of the 3rd party companies open to all. Here is mine for example

Thanks @Jeffus this is what I understood.

I have seen my reading frequency switched twice without my instruction by OVO. Probably another mistake…

And yes if we opt to stay monthly (or less than 30mins)  we potentially miss out on discounts but at least for now that is (or should be!) a customer choice.

@Tim_OVO

This is currently the most voted for open idea.

We haven't had an update from ovo in over year. Still seeing examples where it will be useful.

Could you check, has there been any updates?

Could we have more regular updates generally on the Ideas to keep the Ideas section going?

Thanks as always.

@Jeffus

Yes, referring back to your statement 9 months previous, it should be up to customers and that is very much a legislative matter.

However it has taken OVO 11 months to comply with my request to read once monthly. After 3 months and no progress I took it to OFGEM as a complaint and the matter very much decided in my favour. It then took another 2 months for OVO to comply. The meter reading team is an outsource and whatever policy agreements there are between the entities is seriously flawed. They tried to exchange a perfectly functioning SMETS2 meter wasting engineer time (another outsource) when I had already identified comms issues at a local mast and indeed a more senior OVO manager had confirmed with from information from CSP Arquiva.

So whereas I still think that's a great idea to have this as a portal based customer option I would predict the mechanism to enact that change is going to be highly problematic.

Just to add to the mix that @Nukecad reported being able to request this change to half hourly readings themselves on the online account.

I’m asking around about this functionality and if it’s live for particular customers and set ups...

@waltyboy confirms on that other thread that he also changed to ½ hourly in the online account.

So it sems that the facility was there in September, at least for some customers,  but it appears to have gone missing again

Yes indeed, and much more recently than September (maybe end of October/beginning of November) I again noticed at least one button offering the chance to change to half-hourly: beside the green join Power Move icon, and also the chance to select half-hourly (or indeed back again IIRC) repeated as a link off, I think, the online account meter readings page.

Thanks both!

I’ll get to the bottom of this and update this feature idea accordingly...
