Question

Why cant OVO help Low Income Families when OVO Energy Earned a Profit of £817 million in 2025?

OVO is a disgrace! This energy company is quick to take your money, install a smart metre to make sure they get every penny out of you, yet they don't update their services to reflect the current times. This been 2026, their devices are obsolete and out of date, and they should have an option where you can control your heating wirelessly from a phone or a laptop. Especially families on low incomes as this would help them save money. But OVO energy is more about making profit than looking after their customers. OVO Energy Earning a Profit of £817 million in 2025, I would love to be paying the prices of last year. It is a simple update, why cant they help - does it not fit the business model?

Hi @Alanbraant

There is actually support available this winter! Try https://oes.ovoenergy.com/ as that’s the current portal.

When it comes to OVO’s profits, I don’t really like to comment much there - and as a random guy on the internet I can’t speak officially. But those profits are kinda needed to keep the business afloat to handle future storms. It’s always a lot more complicated than make mega profits, stash the cash forever!

As for the rest, I’m not sure how to answer that, could you elaborate please?

I have a couple of questions for you:

  • Where did you find “OVO Energy Earned a Profit of £817 million in 2025”?
I have just had a layman’s look at the latest accounts for the company that I could find. I see nothing to support your assertion.
  • Why do you think OVO agreed to sell such a successful company to E.On Next?

OVO have been at the forefront of providing “help [for] Low Income Families” for years. Please see OVO’s Extra Support Package is now open to help the most vulnerable customers save up to £300 a year on their energy - OVO

Perhaps they decided to sell because they were running at a loss in recent years - which looks like pure management or the general unpredictability of the world right now. I am far from knowing everything, and to be honest, if it isn't OVO, other suppliers do the same thing.

I’ll put my hands up regarding the figures - I did a quick Google search in frustration and must have misread the profit snippets. These were the results I found:

“OVO Energy reported a net loss of £135 million (and an operating/business loss of £105 million alongside a pre-tax loss of £127 million) for its 2024 financial year, swinging back from a profit of £817 million the previous year.

📊 Financial Overview (2024 Results)

  • Net Loss: £135 million
  • Operating Loss: £105 million (including £67 million in exceptional costs)
  • Turnover: £5.46 billion (down from £8.17 billion in 2023)
  • Gross Profit: £760 million (down from £884 million in 2023)”.

But the core of my frustration remains. It is incredibly tough when you are a single parent trying to heat a home with adolescents, caught in the middle of 'heat or eat' dilemmas. The £150 or £300 support packages do help, and I absolutely welcome them, but they only cover a fraction of the bill during the coldest months.

I didn’t intend to offend anyone; I just wanted to voice how it feels on the receiving end of these bills. Even before global conflicts disrupted markets, energy hikes always seemed to hit hardest right when winter arrives. Compared to many countries, the UK pays an incredibly high price for energy. It also frustrates a layman like me to hear about wind turbines being told to switch off switched off simply because our infrastructure can't store or transport green energy to England when its needed in the entire United Kingdom.

While some households with accumulated wealth might not feel the pinch, for families that are not so fortunate, getting small grants to pass right back to energy companies feels like a temporary plaster on a much bigger structural issue.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective I really do, it means I have been heard, I did not intent to offend anyone, except let OVO know how I was feeling regarding the subject.
