What is the best make of PV panels for the UK?

Best answer by Tim Goodwin

TBH, there is no single ‘best make’ and if there was you would have to quantify what parameters you wanted ‘the best’ to include. Some would want self cleaning, some high output per sq M, some would want long life time, some value for money, etc etc.

Agreed. And also the answer to that question is unknowable given where we are now. Supporting local producers when most PV panels are imported from China? But they took the gamble and deserve to benefit because we (UK) are timid and not prepared to invest. Not a helpful answer, but the alternative is to stay stuck in the past. As an early adopter, I may end up regretting and technology is moving fast so today’s “best” won’t be that for long. Honest answer? Do your research and decide on a mix of economic and practical asseesment while staying true to what motivates your decision (aka your values).

Hey @Ksansbury,

You've received some great responses from newer members of the community, so let's welcome @Tim Goodwin & @Phlash!

I agree with the advice mentioned above; there isn't one "best make" of solar panels, as it depends on individual circumstances and your specific setup. If you have any specific questions about the installation process or solar panels in general, feel free to ask! We can help find answers or share user experiences from the community. I've included some articles and guides below that might be useful to you!

We also have a great in depth guide written by @Peter E and @BPLightlog’s home install blog that could be helpful!

Let us know if there’s anything else you need!

Hey @Ksansbury

Honestly there’s no single best brand for the UK — it really depends on what you want (highest efficiency, longest warranty, best value, etc.). Big names like SunPower, Aiko, JA Solar, Jinko and LONGi are widely used and well‑reviewed here, but the right choice for you will depend on your roof size and budget

Something which is perhaps more important is that if you want to export your excess power which will help considerably with paying the cost back is to make sure you have MCS certification which means using an MCS certified installer. With that you will get a high quality of installation which is important as they are going to be on your roof for 25-30 years. Should you sell the house at any point the buyer's solicitor will be looking for documentation and certification otherwise there will be a shed load of problems if you don't have them. Those are really important documents. Keep them safe. You will need the certificate to get a G98 export licence from the DSO (formerly called the DNO) and your installer should do that for you as part of the work.

Any further questions please come back on here. Hope that goes well for.
