New heating system but struggling to get the right tariff

Hi Everyone,

Thank you to all those who helped last year regarding Air Source heat pump as my oil boiler went down and i was having trouble with my housing association about when it was going to be installed etc. That was in May last year.

Fast forward to this year we now have a heating system ....its Storage heating and I spoke to OVO regarding all this being changed in January this year apparently yes then at the last hour it was no. Ok so I tried to look for a different company that do Economy 7 tariff.

Found one but now OVO don't want to let me go due to a huge bill which I have due to it being wintertime and having to use electric heaters due to no heating system can anyone advise  me what to do obviously I didn't really want to leave but ....its a case of having to but then if OVO did Economy 7 or something similar I wouldn't have to.

... will Viv1966 be able to get a duel tariff like Economy 7 with the meter setup they have ?

If you’ve been advised that we can’t switch you to Economy 7 (which is generally the case)

We can’t tell whether this meter is capable of switching an offpeak circuit on and off. Even if it did have the internal switch necessary, there would have to be an external contactor to do the actual power control.

It seems that the magic use-excess-solar-generation-to-charge-heaters system only works if the heaters are wired to a constant circuit (i.e. not having the charging bit separate from the control bit so charging only happens during offpeak hours). Again, we can’t tell whether this is Viv’s arrangement. It involves installing some extra bits and bobs including a CT clamp, all included in the optional Solar Box.

As @Firedog suggests, a separate supply is not needed for these

So that should mean that a traditional 4 terminal smart meter should work with these heaters.

The balance would then be how much energy is needed during the day for other appliances and how the units are connected

@juliamc will do it may take a few days  to collect info as i have quite a busy week with hospital appointments etc for my partner. By the way will solar useage appear on my IHD?

Of course. There’s no rush. But no, not exactly. The IHD will just show what’s coming and going with the grid. If you’re using grid electricity it’ll show a positive number, if you’re exporting solar it’ll be a negative number. Eg it’s very sunny right now and mine is exporting 🥳 over 5 kW. The minus sign is on the far left by the ⚡️

@juliamc that's useful to know.

Reducing my yearly fossil fuel usage with an EV (-900 litres petrol), A2AHP (-8,700 kWh gas) and Timed Immersion heater (-1,500 kWh gas)

Good Morning, @juliamc, @BPLightlog, @Firedog

i hope you are  all doing Ok just to let you know i am still in the throws of collating information there has been one or two things at home that have prevented me from doing this.  Suffice to say i hsve spoken to our Installation manager about a couple of things which i will relay back to you once i have all the info, one of things i have asked him, he hasn't replied to yet so i am awaiting his reply.

Just thought i would give you an update, so that you know i haven't fallen off the face of the earth!

Big Congrats @juliamc  on getting your award...very well deserved too as was a perfect illustration for me to understand.

Thankyou @Viv1966 !!

Good to hear that your installation manager is on the case 👍🏻. They are best placed to explain how things work together.
You should find out if they are willing to get you battery storage to go with those solar panels - it would mean you could use all the generated electricity when you want it (in long sunny summer days you’d export some too), but that might get you through the spring and autumn without having to import too much. Short cold winter days you would have to pay for all your electricity of course but thankfully the summer does come round again 😎

Morning @BenOvo just to update you i have done what you suggested put in a complaint somebody got back to me  about a week later but now haven't heard anything for about 2 weeks. Octopus are asking me to ask Ovo to lift the objection to me switching.  So just wondering if you have any suggestions as to what  i can do ro speed the process up.

Morning @Viv1966, I hope you’re well. Apologies I haven’t replied to your previous tagged messages, I’ve been on annual leave for over a week.

I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t received a reply since the complaint was reopened - this should’nt be the case at all. My recommendation would be to reply to the last email you received from the complaint handler, as they’ll get a notification that you’ve emailed them. When you email, request that you be allowed to switch to Octopus, on the basis that they’ll be able to put you on the tariff you need to be on to benefit you financially, which OVO aren’t able to do. Request that the objection is lifted, on the basis that you’ll agree to a payment plan for the remainder of the balance on OVO’s side.

Please note - I can’t guarantee that this will be agreed to, however in my opinion this is a fair resolution. Let me know how it goes when you get in touch with them. I’d also mention in the email that you should have had a reply to your complaint by now, as this is a further shortfall.
