High gas usage compared to similar homes

Hi,

I’ve recently noticed (after living here 7 years!) that our gas usage seems high vs similar properties on the OVO app.

We live in a 4 bedroom 1920s extended bungalow - 2 upstairs loft bedrooms - 2 on the ground floor with 2 sitting rooms and a conservatory, we have unfilled cavity walls in the original part of the house (we had a quote for cavity wall insulation which suggested that since we had 3 walls containing chimneys in the older part of the house it wouldn’t be worth filling them) underfloor insulation and some loft insulation.

In terms of cost I accepted our energy bills would be higher than our previous house but when I’ve looked at the actual use we seem to be roughly double average for ”similar” houses. I noticed even when we were on holiday - in the summer and there was no heating or hot water being used - that we seemed to be using kWh - about 2 or 3 per day.

Could this be a sign of an issue with the boiler? It’s about 8 years old and a Worcester combi boiler. Or are we just losing a lot of heat/hot water in an old house??

Any advice would be welcome.

Our gas use last year was about 29000kWh vs 17000kWh for similar homes. Our electricity use is actually less than average and I wouldn’t say we are heavy users in the sense that we have the heating on a thermostat and it’s at a max of 19 degrees even in winter for a few hours/day - we are mainly out during the day so only when in - and 16 degrees overnight which rarely comes on unless a really cold night. We have 2 or 3 showers most days but not excessively hot and reasonably short. So I’m not sure can cut back much but it seems to require a lot of gas to achieve this.

@Heldav83 thanks for your post and welcome to the OVO Forum! Thanks @Taj and @BPLightlog for your helpful replies here.

I agree with @BPLightlog that the similar properties guide can be misleading, and I also agree with @Taj that the problem is most likely the way the property is constructed and insulated. I used to live in an old bungalow myself which was not very efficient, but after insulating the loft our gas usage dropped significantly due to the boiler not working so hard to get up to temperature.

I’d recommend doing a quick Google search of ‘energy saving advice in (your local area)’. You should hopefully find that there are organisations / charities that will give free energy advice based upon your property and appliances, and information on grants that may be available. This sort of advice may also be given by your local council.

If you’d be happy to give me two readings approximately a year apart I’ll be able to tell you how your usage stacks up against an average UK household.

The OVO ‘similar properties’ guide can be misleading. If you have details of how much energy you’re using and when (time of day), you can start to figure out what the highest uses are and look to control/replace as required.

Hello @Heldav83. The boiler may be falling behind in efficiency, but is hardly old. I assume its being serviced.

Some consumption while away may be due to domestic water being kept warm. Is there an eco setting and can you schedule hot water periods? Have you reduced the central heating flow temperature?

However, I suspect you will find it’s the house that is the problem. You mention loft insulation, can you add more, a bungalow will have a large loft to leak the heat. Is the air flow through the chimneys controlled? A lot of heat could be going up the stack.
