Heat Pump Plus tariff

Hi,

I have recently had a Vaillant aroTherm Plus heat pump installed, which is eligible for the Heat Pump Plus add on.

I have entered all details in the eligibility checker and got a message back saying that OVO will get in touch in the next 5-7 days. It has been more than 3 weeks and I haven't got any correspondence with OVO.

I have sent an email to OVO, and also I have been redirected to Heat Pump department but the line just drops after a while.

I have exhausted all communication channels to get to some one to no avail.

Any recommendations as what to do now? Basically their tariff is the main reason I signed up with OVO but I cannot do a simple thing of adding their tariff.

Further info I got from OVO:

We’ve just been advised to stop all new sign-ups to Heat Pump Plus indefinitely. Unfortunately, this is a decision made at a wider level, and I don’t have further details on when this may change.

I spoke to someone from the Heat Pump department at OVO, and they said that I should have received an email from Vaillant asking me if I want to share heat pump login details with OVO, however I have never received such email (checked spam as well, nothing). So OVO will email Vaillant again, fingers crossed Vaillant will email me this time.

Thanks for the help.

Hi, I signed up to move over to OVO yesterday and gave all my details for Heat Pump Plus. But was emailed today saying they’ve paused onboarding new customers.

Can anybody give any reason for this all timescales ?

Morning @johndunbar, I hope you’re well and had a good weekend.

Great to hear that you got through to someone in the right team in the end. Hopefully Vaillant will be in touch soon.

Keep us updated as to how you get on, cheers!

Morning @JLB49 and a warm welcome to the OVO Forum.

Sorry that we’re not taking on new customers to this plan at the moment. I’ve asked for a bit more information, and will let you know when I have further news.

After not getting any emails from Vaillant, and resubmitting my login details to OVO, I just got back from OVO saying they have suspended accepting new customers to Heat Pump Plus!

Very disappointing as that was the main reason I switched to OVO. I am seriously now considering going elsewhere as I am on Simpler Energy tariff which has a flat rate for the whole day, so my bills are currently quite high.

Discussion on Reddit: Ovo Paused taking on Heat Pump Plus customers

Summary: no one knows what is going on. Many switched to OVO just for that tariff and are now left with any support for the cleaner energy.

Hey @JLB49,

I just wanted to let you know that I’ve merged your topic with a similar one to keep everything organised.

It looks like the Heat Pump Plus tariff has paused new signups for now.

I’m waiting to hear from the team next week about their plans, and I’ll be sure to update you in the thread as soon as I find out more.

Have just received an email from Havenwise to tell me that OVO are ending the Heat Pump plus tariff.

son that means that OVO have this year made power move effectively worth very little, have doubled the cost of charging an EV and have doubled the cost of running a heat pump. I am glad to say that I have now abandoned OVO in favour of Octopus. I have enjoyed the benefits of all the OVO benefits for the last two years but I am afraid that it now apparent that all the “sweeteners” have now been abandoned or eroded to such an extent that it is no longer financially sensible to continue with them. I have  little doubt that the devil I don’t yet fully know may peruse  a similar path but I

The Heat Pump Plus termination letter is a bit brutal - basically “Thank you and goodbye”. No mention of any plans for a replacement tariff to encourage heat pump use.

OVO’s commercial policy now seems rather gimmicky. No real advantage of using them now other than the chance to win an O2 arena ticket. Hmm.

Octopus are innovative in tariffs and encouraging renewable energy use. Hopefully OVO will now come forward with some real innovation but at the moment it's all a bit glum.

Yup and O2 arena tickets do not appeal greatly when you live in west Devon!

one does wonder if OVO are in trouble…….

I was lucky enough to be on the scheme with an Ecodan from last year, but I always questioned the economics of this tariff. What we never knew was if OVO were taking the hit on the tariff out of goodwill to heat pump users or whether there was a subsidy from Vaillant, Veissman and Mitsubishi to make sure it wasn’t a loss leader. Either way, considering recent press reports about OVO’s economic woes, in meeting regulatory requirements, the termination of this tariff doesn’t surprise me along with all the other changes to their add-ons like Power Move.

I guess the old adage of something being too good to be true comes to mind and now it’s a case of finding an alternative tariff or supplier. Either way I’m a heat pump fan and losing Heat Pump Plus shouldn’t deter users from the technology.

It will always be the case that companies will have to revisit their business model from time to time in the light of the changing economic landscape. What this means in the case of energy companies is that the rapid change in the generation and use of energy has forced rapid changes on energy suppliers and associated industries. A whole load of energy suppliers went bust shortly after the 2021/22 energy crisis and others had to adapt to stay in business and the landscape continues to change. Some have been caught off balance and others have yet to change. OVO’s changes won’t be the only ones in the industry. I would say the 6-7p charging rate is not sustainable with basic generation costs and the recent RIIO-3 determination by Ofgem is likely to add significant costs to energy and I can see further changes coming.

The best you can do, that anyone can do, is to look at the tariffs that are available now and choose the one that seems to offer the best value. It doesn’t mean it’s going to stay that way in, say, six months time. That is the situation that everyone has to put up with; the uncertainty caused by the introduction of large amounts of renewables on the grid which is being done to cut our dependency on fossil fuels. If you have an EV or a Heat Pump or solar/battery you obviously care enough about the environment to do something but you are a pioneer breaking new ground and taking risks. Anyone who takes a step away from fossil fuel usage has my admiration but the path you take is not the easy one.

Peter

Good bye OVO, after many years of customer loyalty you start pulling the plugs! (1) Removed the 7p rate for EV charging and double it to 14p or sign up for a pre-payment plan - none of which really fitted my usage. (2) Get rid of the Heat Pump Plus tariff of 15p and get booted on to the standard day rate. I did briefly sign-up for the Havenwise heat pump project, but kicked that into touch after getting toasted at 3.00 am on a couple of nights - complete disaster.

Spent the day researching other suppliers - looks like Octopus will be getting a lot of business heading their way.
