Question

Economy 7 Tariff Prices

Hi there,

We recently moved into a new flat, and when we arrived we were told by the landlord that the house had been setup for Economy 7, though I had already signed us up to a 1 Year Fixed tariff with OVO. After a few phone calls, we have apparently been switched to Economy 7, but nothing shows up either on the smart meter or the outside meter so I have no idea what is happening - the immersion heater is also not working as expected, with the ‘7 hour’ switch heating the whole tank constantly.

My main question though is that after asking to switch to an Economy 7 tariff, we’re not on a tariff that has a peak rate of 31.75p/kWh, and an off peak rate of 21.37p/kWh, as well as a standing charge of 62p a day - having looked around a bit this seems ridiculously high to me so I wanted to see if anyone else felt the same? I didn’t get any heads up about what this rate would be so I’m a little shocked and confused.

Have you set up an online account with OVO?. This would allow you to see exactly what is happening with your electricity usage during the previous day. You can view your usage as a graph or a list for each half hour.

What were the prices that were quoted to you and you accepted when you signed up to your fixed deal?

Yeah I can see usage and cost unto the date that they seemingly switched us to Econ 7, but I only have usage data after that, not cost. I’m also not seeing a day or night rate in the readings anywhere online, or on the smart meter/outdoor meter. Seems like something not quite linking up somewhere?

Think I was quoted somewhere around 28/29p for a standard fixed rate back in early September just before we moved, which seemed fairly normal at the time, but I can’t tell if this is a lot higher than things like Octopus Snug, or if I’m just being a bit dim and missing something. We weren’t quoted for the Economy 7 tariff, just got switched over to the new plan from Std 1 Year Fixed.

@bobbymcgill welcome to the OVO Forum. I hope you had a good weekend.

Regarding your post, I can confirm that the rates are, sadly, high at the moment. With Economy 7, the peak (daytime) rate is actually more expensive than the flat unit rate is on the single rate version of the same plan, but the off-peak rate is cheaper.

You can check whether the new plan has been put in place on your app or online account, following this guide:

If you also check the meter readings page, you should see that the two sets of readings are coming through. If you can see that the tariff has peak and off-peak rates, and there are day and night reads coming through, then everything is set up how it should be.

When the mode of a meter / tariff is changed, it can take around 24-48 hours for everything to be updated fully, and for your online account / app to reflect this. Since you first posted, is everything working as it should be now? Have the storage heaters started coming on when they should do? You can find our more info about Economy 7 in this guide:

Thanks for the reply Ben :) totally understand rates aren't great at the moment, just seemed a bit up there when I'm getting quotes just under 10p for a night rate with Octopus Vs 21p with OVO, the gap was so large I had to look into it.

Sadly I think whatever needs to happen on the back end still hasn't happened and it's been a couple of weeks now. On the Meter Readings page within the account I can see both readings but they're still stuck at early October and they're not updating - the smart meter in the lounge also still says the standard 29p so for rate. I've also checked the outside meter and though the ALCS test works, it still doesn't show a Rate 02, so I think I need to get back on to customer services.
