change bulky storage heaters to something else

I've noticed that you haven't had any replies although it is a Sunday (some of us still hang around in here).

Your subject really needs a qualified heating engineer to advise you as it isn't just about replacing the heaters its also about the best type of heating for you given your particular circumstances given that technology moved on quite a lot in that time. It would be wrong of me to suggest a like for like replacement as modern storage heaters come with controls that are a lot more complex and getting that right one would be important as well. I got the storage heater replaced in my mother's place but she had difficulty mastering the controls and it was fortunate that I could monitor energy use and correct what she was doing.

Feel free to come back and ask more questions but getting advice from a heating engineer is the best approach.

​@Peter E is absolutely right here - we’d always err on the side of caution when it comes to recommending heating appliances, as we’re not true experts in this field, and we wouldn't want to end up misadvising you and costing you money.

That said, if your storage heaters are that old, then there’s a very good chance that you’ll be able to save money in the long term if they’re swapped out for a newer alternative. For example, my mum had very old storage heaters in her flat, which were replaced with newer electric panel heaters, along with a much smaller and more efficient water heater. This was all pretty expensive, but has made her bills a fair bit lower through the winter.

My recommendation would be to have a quick Google search of ‘energy saving advice in (your local area)’. You’ll then hopefully find that there’s local organisations, or even your council, offering advice on energy saving installations. You’ll hopefully be pointed in the direction of a reputable company / engineer and, with luck, maybe there’d be some grants you could apply for. 

Lastly, I’d recommend signing up to the Priority Services Register if you haven’t already. This is a free service with multiple benefits, the main one being that you’ll be contacted by the network operator to alert you of  known outages. They’ll also look to get your property back on with priority should thee be a power cut.

Unless you have someone in mind I'm going to give a shout out to Check a Trade who I've used myself to locate someone interested in servicing my Air to air heat pump. You can find them at

but there is also an App for your smart phone if you have one of those. It's a smoother process on there but it works from the web page as well. At least it filters out usuitable people as checks are carried out on their competencies and background.

Remember that the bigger part of the cost of updating the heating is the electricity it's going to use over the years to come so you need someone who knows what they are doing.
