Question

Can I outsmart a "smart" dimplex quantum storage heater

We've had updated Dimplex storage heaters (Quantum QM100RF etc)  for 2 months now, and there’s one thing that isn't good. The kitchen has a patio door. In fine weather the sun comes through it in the afternoon and heats up the room a lot for an hour or more. We are on Economy 10, with its afternoon charging time coinciding with the most heat from the sun  to this room. The heater’s smartness seems to decide to stop charging it up with heat for later. I suppose it “thinks” that it's warm weather outside so it won't need to output much heat later.  That’s been OK until recently, when on some days it’s been sunny but very cold outside (freezing yesterday). The result is that the Quantum heater runs out of heat early in the evening.  The other rooms are shaded from the sun, and their heaters’ output fully all evening.

Is there any way in which I can influence it to input energy more during this afternoon off-peak period?  I cant see any settings that let me.

PS   various leafets, instructions etc say:

Quantum’s revolutionary iQ controller automatically responds to changing weather conditions and your heating requirements to maintain your ideal room temperature. The innovative, built-in iQ controller monitors the weather and your heating habits, then automatically adjusts so you can enjoy your perfect room temperature – without lifting a finger.

Your heater will record the room temperatures over a 3-day period. It’ll then use this information to tell the heater how much it needs to charge overnight. Making sure it’s got enough charge to give you the right amount of heat the next day. If you make any changes to the settings or use the ‘boost’ function, the heater will take this into account when charging overnight.

Dynamic, intelligent charge calculation stores only the energy you need.

If the output of the storage heater is not able to deliver the required heat demand throughout the day, it is possible to force the heater to store additional energy.(page 33 of  the instruction book)

Hi @dutyhog

If you contact the manufacturer it is quite possible that they have come across this before and may be able to offer a solution.

Try contacting them here

https://www.dimplex.co.uk/sales-enquiries

On the slight chance this might work I'm wondering if you use a fan to move air around the room when the conditions cause a problem to reduce the temperature that the unit is seeing so as to get it to work properly. You need to change the setting that detects open windows to off.

Hope you find a solution.

@dutyhog I’ve found this Dimplex page for using the extra charge setting, I wonder whether it may help: https://help.gdhv.co.uk/support/solutions/articles/79000138994-can-i-set-demand-heat-extra-charge-at-night-on-my-quantum-heater-

Thanks Ben. Their normal help and FAQs didn’t lead me to that page.Maybe I just didn’t spot that item.

Our heater is a series 14 - not in these listed. It is a QM100 listed at the bottom of the page but it’s not clear which instruction applies, if any.

I asked Dimplex yesterday so I’ll wait for their reply.

I’ve just noticed another idea in those FAQs - Slave mode. I could switch to it in the kitchen only on sunny afternoons.
