We had a ASHP installed this year and so our storage heaters are all gone. Nothing is wired to the Economy 7 cable. OVO came and removed it/or capped it off? Our tariff is Simpler Energy Economy 7 so do we still receive the cheaper night rate? We don’t have the cable that supplied it so are assuming we now pay the day rate 24/7. Anyone know

@Tricko thanks for your post, I hope you had a nice weekend.

To confirm, if you’re still on an economy 7 plan then you’ll still be getting the cheaper night rate, however the daytime rate will be more expensive than the unit rate on a single rate plan. Anyone who has an economy 7 plan will still have their night time usage billed on the cheaper rate however, if you’ve had the storage heaters removed, it may be the case that you’re not using enough in the off peak hours to justify the economy 7 plan. Also, you’ll potentially be able to save money by going on a fixed tariff.

From my experience of working customer accounts in the past, I’d recommend that you contact our Support Team and ask them to do the following:

  • Calculate your EAC (average annual consumption) since the storage heaters have been removed
  • Check whether you’d be better off on a single rate plan, or on economy 7
  • Check whether you can save money on a fixed tariff rather than Simpler Energy

Please note: These calculations must be carried out solely looking at your usage from the date the storage heaters were removed, and must not include any usage prior to that date. If you have any issues with this, or if the advisor you speak to struggles with the calculations please shoot me over a private message and I’ll see if I can get someone on the case for you.

What does the area near your meter look like @Tricko ? The wiring might have changed but you should still be able to use power at off peak times.

With a heat pump, you might be better with a different tariff - some are specifically designed for heat pumps.
