Get your heat pump installed through OVO with Heat Geek!

When do you intend to start supplying your heat pumps?  Are your installations going to be one size fits all like the tentacle company? 

From everything I’ve read about Heat Geeks they would absolutely not have a one size fits all policy.

Apologies for the delay, I’m back with an update. 

Like juliamc mentioned, Heat Geek design bespoke systems for every installation to tailor it to the specific house.

Once the survey is paid for and the survey has been complete, you’ll then be given dates of when the installation can take place. Typically this entire process could take up to 3 months. Heat Geeks will decide on the best installation equipment to provide the most efficient system. Every home is different so they will tailor this accordingly to each home as needed.

Good question, @sjcsystems. Here’s the advice on the product page:

We’re inviting a limited number of customers to test out a special heat pump offer, before we launch nationwide. Register your interest and we'll be in touch when we're installing in your area.

We'll invite you to check whether your property is suitable for a heat pump through the journey we've built with our installation partner Heat Geek and they'll provide you with an indicative quote.

If you’re happy with your quote, Heat Geek will take a £350 advance payment (taken off the final cost if installation goes ahead) and book in your home survey. During the home survey, your Heat Geek engineer will check that a heat pump is definitely suitable for your home and finalise the heating design to make sure your system will be as efficient as possible.

They'll then send you the details and get your agreement that you're happy to move ahead with the installation.

Your Heat Geek engineer will be on hand to answer any questions so you have a single point of contact at all times. Once you're happy to proceed, Heat Geek will get the installation booked in and then take final payment once the job's complete.

Quick question Tim - one of the questions asked on the contact form is Are you an OVO customer? Should a prospective customer switch to OVO first or are they able to go through the process before switching? Asking for a friend!!

So do I have to switch back to you for electricity before taking up this offer?

I’ve checked your tariffs, and despite ticking the box to leasing an EV, I didn’t see any tariffs offered with reduced prices overnight.  I also saw no mention of your SEG/export tariffs.  So for owners of EVs on Ovo, where do I find tariffs with a time of day plan please?

Actually, OVO has the EV thing as a free Add-On you can attach to any Plan without affecting the tariff rates. It gives you 10p/kWh EV Charging 24/7/365 as long as you have a compatible EV or Charger.

What I was wondering was can you start the process of contacting a heat geek before switching ? There’s a question on the form asking if OVO is already  your supplier, suggesting that the switch can take place later.

@juliamc this was my original question, because I didn’t intend to change my supplier of electricity.  

@Blastoise186  I have a Kia e-Niro and myEnergi Zappi chargepoint.  Neither of which are on your compatibility list.

So Ohme chargers don’t understand solar.  The Indra ones do, but the units alone are £949, £1199 or £1349 each, and then fitting on top.

Even more reason not to start the energy switch until the conversation about the heat pump has taken place.

Or you tell me you’re about to add Kia and/or myEnergi to your supported list?

I’m only a forum volunteer here, not OVO staff.

As far as I’m aware, Kia support could be a while off - Octopus effectively gave up and abandoned it.

I have an EV but I’m not on Charge Anytime and I’m curious to know how would you distinguish between the heat pump usage at 15p per kWh and EV/house usage on my standard variable tariff?

For comparison if I was on Charge Anytime you would have information as to what energy the EV needs and you would send commands (to the car or charge point) to enable the car charging so you know what energy has been supplied for that purpose.

The heat pump will be fitted with its own electric meter which accounts for the hp usage, which will be charged at the 15p rate.

Hey @juliamc & @sjcsystems Sorry about that, I’ve got some more info now, hopefully this will clear things up.

You can complete the register interest form without being an OVO customer, so you could check if you’d be happy with the heat pump quote etc., before switching back to OVO to get the add-on if you’re happy with the quote.

@Blastoise186 sorry I didn’t know your position here…

myEnergi have a beta trial at the moment which appears to be very successful where the Zappi is integrating with Intelligent Octopus for scheduled charges.  I’m not in that at the moment.  

OK, so how is this going to know if the electricity being consumed is coming from the grid or from my PV/batteries?  Does it have CT clamps on the feeds to know?  I assume I’m not being charged 15p for self-consumption?

Data from your Smart Meter combined with that of the Heat Pump would be used to figure that out.

After the survey if Heat Geek say they can't install a heat pump, do customers get the £350 back?

It may be rare, but never say never I suspect. 

I would think the ‘indicative quote’ stage is when they’d be able to say if the property was not suitable for a heat pump, so before the home survey was arranged, therefore before the fee was paid. The home survey will be the room by room heat loss calculation, I imagine.
