Question

Smart meter and solar

Hi,

I currently have a solar export meter with Eon which I return readings on for FIT payments.

I have the normal electric meter which is with Ovo.

If I have a smart meter fitted for the normal electric meter will it in any way affect the solar meter?

Thanks

Hi,

OVO is my electricity suppler and have a OVO Smart Meter fitted, I also have a Solax inverter that exports surplus solar energy to the grid, with OVO`S rubbish SEG rate for third party Solar installs, I export my surplus solar to Scottish Power @ 0.12p per kwh, but still using the same OVO smart meter.

On my smart meter, I cycle thru the display until i find -A “exported to the grid”.

In sept 2024 I was fortunate to have a 2,460.00 kWp system (6 Panels, South East facing) fitted “FOR FREE” thru a government grant,

Up to now i have generated around 690kwh for free and exported 337kwh to Scottish Power😊

That’s a very happy story @johnr64, good news!  And, yep @SHK95, my smart meter doesn’t in any way impact on my generation meter or on my own (separate) export meter which I use for my FiT readings. So, no worries, go ahead with that smart meter install, I’m very happy with mine.

However, for folk with house batteries who use the grid to top up their batteries when their solar panels don’t produce quite enough power on their own to recharge their batteries, then it’s worth remembering that those people use the Net figure on their generation meter to submit their FiT reading, but it doesn’t sound to me as if that specific arrangement applies in you own case.

atb,
