Hi

We have a capped pipe in our living room we think it might have been used for a gas fire not too sure. It goes up into the ceiling and we've no idea where it goes from there. How do we find out if it is still a live gas pipe. We want to decorate and would like,e to have it removed.

You will need to remove the floorboards in the room above and fully trace the pipe back to the main incoming connection which may be where your meter is located. Having fully traced the pipe you will need a registered gas engineer to disconnect it to ensure the gas network within your home remains safe. Once they have disconnected the pipe the remains can be safely removed.

If you do not have or cannot removed boards to trace the pipework a gas engineer should be able to advise further.
