Sorry to say im over 60 and have no idea if the EV3 can use the internet

any help would be greatfully received,i would rather not move supplier but if that is the only way to make it work i may have to.

Hi @colin1234 ,

Welcome to the OVO Forum! The name’s Blastoise186 and I’m one of the regulars around here.

First thing I’ll say is that we actually don’t recommend the Ohme chargers these days and prefer to steer folks away from that brand due to too many issues we’ve seen on the Forum with them. Ohme deliberately pulled the plug on Charge Anytime support last year and made a real mess of that process - there’s also concerns flying around about long-term reliability of their units so I can’t recommend them at this time.

Just to mention… OVO Charge Anytime requires a smartphone or tablet running Android or iOS/iPadOS to use the OVO Charge app. It does NOT support Kindle Fire tablets at this time. Please make sure you have a compatible device handy!

If you’re open to an alternative Charger, you can find the list of the ones OVO currently supports over at https://www.ovoenergy.com/electric-cars/charge-anytime-cars-and-chargers . Out of these, Hypervolt, EVEC and NexBlue have shown very serious commitment to seriously good customer service and they sometimes with us Forum regulars to get answers quickly if needed. They’re all definitely worth exploring and you can buy some of them via OVO if you wish with installation included - https://www.ovoenergy.com/electric-cars/smart-charger is the link for that. You can also go direct to the manufacturer if you prefer, it’s completely down to what you feel comfortable with. They’re all decent options and all of them support Charge Anytime.

The Kia EV3 does support Charge Anytime, but it’s still in Beta status due to historical instability issues with Kia/Hyundai BlueLink. All trims should have internet connectivity and your local Kia dealer can help you get that set up regardless of whether you’re on Motability because the local dealer you pick up the car from is responsible for that part of customer service anyway.

OVO’s team are also on hand if you need them (edited by moderator):

Hope that helps. Any questions, feel free to reply back on this forum thread.

Yes, I set the charger to dumb mode ie no schedule and same with the car. Use the OVO charge anytime app and just told it when I wanted it ready and plugged in. Worked fine but have yet to try now part of trial.

Thanks for joining the trial @Ianburridge, great stuff. Hopefully it’ll all work well after some testing.

As a general reply, moving from a petrol/diesel is not a mistake. Even if you can't get discount charging, EVs are so much cheaper even on a fixed, non-discount rate. There seems to be an attitude or a misconception that an EV is only worth getting if you can get discount charging. I spent the first two years with my Zoe charging on a fixed rate tariff and it's so much cheaper than paying the 55% fuel tax plus VAT on top of that.

My considered advice is don't fret about not going on to a discount rate to start with. Get the car and enjoy it for what it is and, on a fixed rate, you can charge it as much as you want and when you want without any restriction. Enjoy that because when you choose a discount charging tariff you could have all sorts of restrictions placed on you. It also might not be as reliable.

After adapting to your EV carefully look at what your discount charging options are over a period of time when you know how much and when you need to charge. THEN you can go to the market and get the tariff that suits your needs. Time spent carefully considering what tariff to go for will pay back in the long term. A hasty decision will cost you money and frustration.

Wishing everyone all the best on their EV journey but only choose when you know what you need because when I started it turned out I had no idea even though I thought I did.

Thanks for this insight @Peter E - with all the varying options available across the industry it’s definitely easy to start thinking that EVs aren’t worth it until you find a great deal that suits you and your driving habits. I’ll make sure to ask you for advice when I make the leap to an EV 😉.

Peter,

I have ev3 and ohme charger which I got when OVO recommended it. You can charge ok with charge anytime or the new all day one.

Have nothing set on the charger te schedule tell either OVO when you want it ready by ( I have 0800) and then simply plug in.

Ovo may not recommend ohme but it still works fine.
