Question

Smart charging schedule ignoring ready by time

My wife and I have a hybrid each both with circa 25kWh batteries. We both use nearly all of that on our weekday commutes. I have a 7.4kW charger. Each evening I get home from work at about 6pm and put my car on charge and then when I go to bed at about 11pm I switch the cable over and charge my wife's car ready for the morning. I use the ovo charge app to set a ready by time of 11pm. This means the smart charging function gets 5 hours to optimise the smart charge but around 3.5 hours of that it will need to be running in order to meet my 'ready by' time. The problem is it always pauses the charge for too long and so can never hit its target. This evening i looked at my phone at 10.30pm and the charging was paused with 50% charge leaving it more than 12 kW to fill in 30 minutes. Or in other words the supposedly smart app had planned a schedule that requires a remaining charge speed four times the capacity of the charging setup I have just to do what I set it to do.

A backup solution i shouldn't have to rely on is the urgent charge feature which I could deploy (and accept paying more than I should for charging but guarantee I would have the full battery I need at my ready by time). But the urgent charge function annoyingly dissappears as soon as the charge starts so I have to rely on waiting for the charge to pause before deploying it which would mean focusing on my phone rather than family for the evening.

I struggle to believe that the app/smart charging would not be able to fulfill what are pretty basic charging needs so what can I do differently or can the app be improved?

Morning @Avus303 and thanks for your post.

I’m not an expert on this as don’t own an EV myself, so I’m going to call on @Peter E and @juliamc for some advice if they don’t mind 😁.

I’m wondering if setting the ready by time to 10pm instead of 11pm might do the trick - is this something you’ve already tried?

Hi @Avus303

Thanks for bringing your question on here. I'm not a Charge Anytime user so I'm working in the dark here a bit even though I've had an EV for five years.

Without looking too deeply into what might be the issue can I make a suggestion to provide me with a bit more information. Can you try charging the cars the other way round if that's possible. If your wife's car doesn't charge within the time that your car charges then there is something to investigate there.

If your wife's car charges fully and yours doesn't then it is more likely to be something with the way CA is working.

If you can do that then we may be able to diagnose the issue from there or may become obvious to you what the issue is.

Peter

Reducing my yearly fossil fuel usage with an EV (-900 litres petrol saving about £950/year), A2AHP (-8,700 kWh gas, cost neutral) and Timed Immersion heater (-1,500 kWh gas, £20/year more expensive but reducing as the gas price goes up)

, thanks for your responses. I tried it last night but switching our cars around. The same thing happened so CA had paused the charging enough to not give it time to complete the charge by my ready to time. So it feels like an app issue.

Hey @Avus303,

I’m sorry you’ve been having difficulty charging with the Charge Anytime app. I’ve found some advice that we’ve given previously through the Forum which might help but keep in mind we don’t know anything about your charger or vehicle so the advice may differ depending on models:

If experiencing this issue when charging multiple vehicles:

Once you’ve charged one vehicle, unplug it and wait for 15 minutes to allow the optimiser to reset. After that, you can plug in your next vehicle, set your desired “ready by” time, and the app will take care of the rest.

If experiencing this issue when charging a single vehicle:

If your EV doesn’t accept charge when it’s offered by the charger, for a period of 20 minutes, we’ll assume the EV is fully charged and remove schedules from the charger.
If the app initially shows schedules when the EV is plugged in but then stops displaying them after the EV stops charging, please:

  • Check for any settings in the EV that could restrict charging.
  • Unplug the EV for 15 minutes, then plug it in again to reset the charging schedules.

Additionally, here are some additional troubleshooting steps I need you to run through:

  •
  • Make sure your charger is online. If the LED status is solid white, the charger is online and connected to the charging platform (the Indra app will also confirm this). If it’s offline, the charger will be flashing purple (the Indra app should also confirm when the charger is offline). When the charger is offline, smart charging/charging via schedule won’t work. We recommend turning your charger off for 30 mins for a full reset. If this doesn't work, you'll need to contact your chargers support.
  • Make sure there are no schedules set in your vehicle, your vehicle app or the charger app.
  • Unplug for 15 minutes to let our smart charging optimiser reset.
  • Make sure your charger is unlocked - the settings section of the charger app gives you the option to lock or unlock your charger.
  • Make sure the vehicle is in a state ready to accept charge before plugging in - you can ‘wake up’ an EV by unlocking, opening and closing a door, then locking again prior to plug in.
  • Plug in, set a new ready by time and let the Charge Anytime app do the rest.

If you’re still having issues then speaking to our Charger Anytime team so they can triage this over a call with you would be our recommended next steps:

I hope this helps!
