Question

repair on new?

I have a Project EV home charger installed by OVO appointed engineers in 2021. It has been faultless until recent months where random tripping has now become permanent at both events charger and mains trip.
Do I seek a repair, for which nobody at EV or private adverts seem to want to know. OR...
Do Ovo offer a discount on replacement installation where the wiring already exists?
Should like the idea of having the updated installation with a compatible charger and OVO Charge Anytime account. I do c.12000 miles a year in Ford Mustang Mach EV

    Hiya!

Welcome @Ruith , looks like you’re new around here. Or at least… You’ve not been around for a while so if that’s the case, good to see you again! :D

AFAIK there isn’t a discount for having the wiring already in place, but what is very likely is it’d just be a Standard Installation and a faster job if the wiring is identical.

Ford kinda fell out with OVO (and almost all other suppliers!) a couple of years ago by rug-pulling everyone, so the EV method for Charge Anytime won’t work for you. If you fancy CA, then you’ll definitely want a compatible Charger.

    Thanks @Blastoise186
I remember now, I did try using the early form of ‘Charge Anytime’ back in early 2022 maybe, but it failed as kept resetting my ‘Ford’ Mustang. Ford did the apologising and gave me a £100 voucher to spend on servicing or accessories! So, that issue is obviously not solved, but if I get a compatible charger now I will be able to use ‘Charge Anytime’ so long as it is controlled from the App, not the car? Do you know?

Morning @Ruith and welcome back to the OVO Forum 😊. I hope you’re doing well.

I couldn’t say for sure on this one, as our EV / charger offerings are different now than they were in 2021. On our website, we point customers who’ve had charger installations via OVO back to the manufacturer, should there be any sort of fault.

Project EV’s contact details can be found here - but it sounds like you’ve not had much joy when speaking to them…

I’ve had a look online and there’s similar issues reported on the SpeakEV forum here. I’ve also found this Facebook thread where this same issue is being discussed. It looks like there’s some helpful people in these threads that might be able to advise you. I’ve seen someone on the Facebook thread saying internals of charger likely failed, so if not under warranty then you will be looking at a new charger.

Hopefully you won’t end up needing a new charger but, if so, we do offer discounted installations. You could get a quote and ask if there’d be any further discount possible, but I can’t guarantee it will be, and haven’t heard of this being offered. Worth an ask though!

Hi @Ben_OVO If I were to get a compatible charger now I will be able to use ‘Charge Anytime’ so long as it is controlled from the OVO App, not the car? I have a Ford Mustang and am thinking that I might save enough over a period of time to warrant the charger any way.

    Hi @Ruith

Sorry to hear your charge point has failed. It is fairly typical that they last five or six years before throwing the towel in. Charge points can last 10 years or so but they tend to be the non-smart ones or one where it has lost the smart funtion or no one supports that model any more for smart charging.

The usual route at this point is to find a competent electrician (has to have Part P certification to the wiring regs) who will change your charge point for a compatible one on OVO's list. Hypervolt is well thought of but there are others. Check a Trade is a good source for competent, trustworthy trades people.

The electrician will also look at everything from the feed from the consumer unit to make sure it complies with the current edition of the wiring regs and do a health check in the process. I hope the change over goes well.

Reducing my yearly fossil fuel usage with an EV (-900 litres petrol saving about £950/year), A2AHP (-8,700 kWh gas, cost neutral) and Timed Immersion heater (-1,500 kWh gas, £20/year more expensive but reducing as the gas price goes up)
