Charge Anytime & pre-conditioning via Grid energy

Hi,

just had my hypervolt 3 pro installed and very helpful engineer. One thing I’m struggling with is how to use grid energy to precondition battery, before a journey.

i ask ChargeAnytime to be ready by 7 and I might be leaving at 8am, with my old 13amp charger, I could tell the car, leaving at 8 or even just getting it to defrost by manually setting it and it would use grid energy saving the battery for the journey.

i don’t mind that the preconditioning is on a more expensive rate, but I assume the charger won’t accept the request from the car and just use the battery.

Is there anything I need to do, or is it just the way it is?

Hi @Colingray83 ,

I’ve had a chat with Hypervolt and they’ve said the Charger probably wouldn’t automatically fire up outside of the schedule so you may need to run off of battery to precondition.

Alternatively, you could run an Urgent Charge and then precondition that way - but it would be at standard (non-discounted) rates.

Hope that helps!

@scoob198 thanks for getting back in touch. I’ve reached out to the Charge Anytime team for more answers.

In the meantime, I’m wondering whether @Jeffus may be able to shed some light on this?

Hi,

my experience is that it won’t do what you want. The charge anytime app is the decider of when and what charge you get. I’m sometimes lucky and it will allow a smart charge at the required time. I think I raised a similar point to you earlier in another post.

however you can override it (manually) to get the preconditioning and assuming it’s fully charged from the overnight charge will only draw what it needs.

Share here if you get something different back from the team.

My experience with the CA tariff since the change to the app etc is quite poor. I don’t think ‘Charge AnyTime’ is quite true any more.

You basically get a window of charge and then that's it, it doesn’t seem to be able to ‘top up’ your charge to keep it at the SoC you requested. My typical experience:

If I plug my Model 3 in when I get home (6pm-ish) to charge to 80% by 7am, it will then charge in bits and pieces over the evening, it will typically be done at some point overnight. However with things like preconditioning (cabin temperature) and sentry mode, it actually ends up being more like 78% by 7am. Not because it never reached 80%, it did, but then it shuts off and then the battery is used for the rest of the night. This might be a few hours, might be six, all depending on when it’s finished charging - it doesn’t allow for more charge, even though it’s still before the designated 7am time. It’s like the app is saying ‘No, I got you to 80%, that's your lot for this session, not my problem it’s lost a bit’

Previously, the charger and the car would clearly speak to each other more intelligently and if the car used some power on the driveway, i.e defrosting during winter, it would replenish from the charger.

It’s not a massive issue, if I really need some extra juice before heading out I can summon ‘Urgent Charge’ but it won’t be at the CA rate so it goes against the object of the tariff really.

The biggest problem by far is that it seems to struggle with using the charger outside of what it must expect is a regular routine. I.e if I get home, plug in, and after an hour, my wife needs the car so goes out for a bit, comes back and plugins back in. Nothing. Just says ‘Planning your next charge’ - meanwhile the Tesla has no clue what’s going on and keeps telling us the charger isn’t ready, might not be compatible etc. We figured out that basically we have to make the charger ‘forget’ it’s already charged the car a bit today, by unplugging it for about an hour, plugging back in and then it triggers a fresh charge session, but I’ll be honest with you, that’s really poor. If it’s not sorted soon I’ll be moving.
