I'm enjoying the challenge of reducing electricity use between 4 and 7- Anyone else?

Am I the only one who is enjoying the challenge of reducing electricity use between 4 and 7?

I am loving having to do nothing after getting in from work and being rewarded.

We just have the gas heating one or 2 led lights and a TV on and relax for a few hours.

Fridges and freezers are negligible 1 because they use very little electricity and 2 because they are on 24hrs a day so make very little difference to the 15% (3hrs = 15%). And yes we have 2 small chest freezers and a tall fridge freezer on at all times.

Same as me then. So why couldn't I get below the 12.5%. We use the washing machine, oven and dishwasher outside of these times. To be honest, I gave up after six weeks. Sat in the dark, hungry waiting for 7pm and still at 18%+.  We didn't bother about when we cooked , dishwasher etc and it only got as high as 19%???

We previously did most of our washing on a weekend but have changed that to mid week outside of the 4-7 period and that seems to have worked for us. And again another plus as we have gained time at the weekends when we would normally be doing the washing.

Do you by any chance boil a kettle or anything similar in the period.? Boiling a kettle just once is very heavy on electricity.  We have stopped using a kettle completely and just heat what we need for a drink in the microwave and not at all during the 4-7 period.

No to boiling a kettle, we don't gave warm drinks. This is what I mean, only a TV, freezer sbd fridge on in the 4-7pm period. No heating.  We changed our usage and thought more about it for the rest of the day. Probably saved more than the £20 a month OVO offered.

Bit can't be turned off during the target timed. If you're already turning off unnecessary electrics do have a low starting point they're a significant part of your usage

Our fridge makes a big difference, so I have it on a timer for the duration of the Power Move. Turning it off for those three hours can remove about 100W between 4-7PM, which is really quite a high percentage of the actual use between 4-7PM. Our fridge is quite old and it really does make a difference.

I had the chest freezer similarly turned off 4-7 for a while, but it then starts alarming and perhaps frost building up, so we put that back on 24/7.

Also, the gas central heating really does use quite a lot if you let it, mainly the water pump and fans. So I have it kicking in 3-4 to get the house warmed up a bit, and then off till 7PM when it kicks in again. Its another 85-140 W that isn’t there 4-7PM.

If you add up the fridge and boiler its up to a 200-250W reduction for that period. With those switched off, the background house usage can drop below 100W if nobody is home. Obviously it’s more as soon as anyone is back from School/Work or working from home., but it does make a big difference.

Power move has been easy as a household without children and both of us working from home. It’s also probably changed our eating habits for the better in terms of the primary meal of the day has to be consumed before 4PM and we tend to have a snack or soup as our evening meal. Which is my way of saying I suspect your best reference stories will be about how families have done it because the thought of that complexity is a story more likely worth telling!
