Hello!

I wonder if anyone can tell me why IHD is saying gas disablement suspended?

Good to hear that the notice has now gone.

I don’t have a PAYG meter myself so can’t be sure about this, but:

It may just be that it was showing because of those “Friendly hours” even though you weren’t actually needing or using them.

ie. The IHD may just telling you that you won’t get cut off even if you do run out of credit.

If that is the case then you might expect it to come back on again at 5-PM today until 9-AM tomorrow - those are the ‘Friendly hours’ during the week.

For further info here is a list of the times when you won’t be disconnected if you happen to run out of credit:

Non-disconnect times:

Smart meters

  • Between 5pm and 9am Monday to Friday

  • Before 9am or after 3pm on Saturday

  • All day on Sunday

  • Easter Sunday, 25 and 26 December, and 1 January

It generally means that you have run out of credit for Gas, but supply hasn’t been cut just yet.

Normally when you run out of credit on a PAYG meter the supply is disabled until you top-up again (or use the emergency credit facility).

However during “Friendly Credit” hours that disablement is suspended, and so your gas supply automatically stays one during those ‘friendly’ hours.

If using gas during that period then you are still running up the charge for using it which will need to be paid back the next time that you top-up.

See this, it’s about the same message for electricity but the advice is the same:

Thanks Nukecad,

That's strange because my balance for gas is sitting at £28.19, and I still have heating & hot water this morning.  I should maybe say we just had our gas smart meter commissioned yesterday so the IHD is all brand new to us.

Ha, as it’s a new meter then it’s more likely because the new meter isn’t fully on the system yet.

In which case it will probably be running in a setting-up mode for now, and so not using the credit that you already have on there yet.

Is the credit there reducing as you use gas, or is it static for now?
If it’s static then that would definitely show that you are in a Friendly/set-up mode for the moment.

Once the meter is fully commissioned and on the system then it will start to take the credit, including for what you have used since it was installed.

It's definitely reducing, down from £29.45 on first post last night to £27.87 just now.  The gas disablement suspended notice has gone this morning.

Hey @Aileen Drummond,

Hey there! Welcome to the community! It’s fantastic to see how warmly you’ve been welcomed already, thanks to Nukecad. I’m super glad to hear that the message has disappeared—Nukecad is spot on; it might have just been showing up while your meter was doing some behind-the-scenes setup.

Also, Nukecad shared some great tips about friendly credit! It's really helpful to keep in mind the timeframes involved. I know firsthand how easy it is to forget to top up when you’re on PAYG. Knowing when your meter might turn off or stay on can definitely ease any worries, especially during the weekends or late at night. If you ever have questions or need support, we’re all here for you!
