Accidentally sent KWH gas reading instead of m3 reading?

I have moved to ovo from early May after moving into a new property and have been sending in regular meter readings for my gas because they are not automatically picked up, in the last 24 hours I have used no gas and my boiler is off but I have noticed the meter today has increased by 2 units, why is this if I haven't used any since previous meter reading was sent

When reading a traditional gas meter, the reading will be shown in either cubic feet (imperial meter) or m3 (metric meter). When you’ve submitted the reading, we then convert your usage to kwh to bill you. Please don’t provide a reading displayed as ‘kwh’ as this won’t be correct. If you’ve accidentally given a read in kwh please send a photo of your gas meter, clearly showing the reading and the meter serial number, to our Support Team. You can find advice for reading your meters here. If you do have traditional meters, we’d recommend upgrading to a smart meter.

Those are large numbers if as you say there’s no gas being used. Could it be that you’re submitting kWh figures from the meter instead of m³? [*] Some meters do provide a kWh display just for information, but because the meter doesn’t know the calorific value of the gas it’s metering, the kWh figures are only approximate.  1 m³ gives a bit more than 11 kWh.

If those really are m³ readings, something is wrong. Either there’s a biggish gas leak somewhere - which I think you would have noticed - or the meter is faulty. You should be able to turn the gas off at the meter’s Emergency Control Valve:

Take a meter reading and preferably a clear photo of the meter before closing the valve, then again 12 hours later.

  • If the reading has changed, the meter is faulty. Call Support, tell them what you’ve found out and ask them to send an engineer round to fix or replace it.
  • If the reading hasn’t changed, gas was being used or escaping somewhere in the house before you closed it. If you can’t detect where the gas is going, call a gas engineer to come and check for you.

*   EDIT to add: another possibility is that you’ve ignored the decimal point when reading the meter. Figures after the decimal point shouldn’t be submitted - only whole numbers of m³.

Hey @darinbentley ,

Could you show us the meter readings you’re seeing please? We can advise on this one, but we can’t access your account so you’ll need to help us out with what you can see.

Sorry about this, but our X-Ray Vision and TARDIS functionality is still under development!

These are the readings I sent in manually cost is around 1.33 for each of the 2 unit's according to the ovo ap but I didn't use any. As far as I am aware standing charge is calculated separately  isn't it

I checked the cost for the above dates on my smart meter and it was only 42p or there abouts, I am assuming that's the pilot, but on the ovo ap it says cost for these days is 1.33 after giving in the meter readings.

Any ideas please

It could be the pilot light on anything that uses one.

Worth noting that the IHD doesn’t account for stuff like the Calorific Value because it doesn’t know that data - which also changes daily. Standing Charges are, however, counted separately from Meter Readings.

If you think the readings are wrong though, you should have a word with OVO Support so they can investigate further.

I have noticed the meter today has increased by 2 units,

Is that the actual reading on the actual mater?
Or is it just what the app or online portal is telling you?

How often are you sending in readings?
Have you actually been sending manual readings in each day, ie. one each day on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of June?

@Blastoise186, @Nukecad, @Firedog thanks for your great answers here.

@darinbentley please do keep us updated as to how you get on. Hopefully this isn’t a gas leak, but I want to include the gas safety information below. You’ll find the correct information here for if you can smell gas etc:

Contact Support and explain what has happened. If you use the webchat option, you could upload photos of your meter to illustrate the situation. If you show the latest m³ reading, you could ask for the account to be rebilled from the start.
