Hi @Dan.waddy - thanks for the pictures.

That’s a pipit In Home Display. We’ve got a guide here that will help you diagnose why it’s not showing your usage:

If I’m honest I agree that it’s not the best device. You might consider buying an In Home Display, guide here:

Lastly, what’s wrong with the OVO online usage section: https://account.ovoenergy.com/usage

I was with SSE when this problem started with no joy from them I have been in touch with the Ovo team but was had to push for some kind of answer. They are saying they will send a new unit at some time, probably next year from the answers I get, can anyone help ? What I know the Tosh box is flashing every 5 seconds , so good signal. The ihd is a TRIO2, this is where I think the problem is when checking the system status meter network not connected 26-1, electricity network not connected 28-2, gametes not connected 29-2. This information has been passed to both suppliers who have tried system checks and resets but nothing, yes the ihd was within inches of the Tosh box.

Hiya! Just so you know, I’m a forum volunteer.

It sounds like the IHD isn’t paired properly. I can’t tell you the exact details, but I have a lookup table that Geo gave me. I’m not allowed to share the exact details, but I can provide some tips that may or may not help you.

Try these options in this order:

  1. Restart the IHD completely near the Comms Hub and wait FIVE minutes
  2. Keep the IHD near the Comms Hub overnight while powered on
  3. Request that the Comms Hub is rebooted, followed by the meters

My IHD from SSE has never worked since being taken over by OVO. I have tried the help line but they keep hanging up mid conversation. The message service (bot) just says they're busy and to call the helpline so going round in circles. How do I get a new IHD from OVO as I have never received one??

Hello I am with Boost PAYG and having numerous problems with SMET1 meters and communication

I have a very old small white Pipit? IHD which was left for me by the previous tenant ( we did a social housing mutual exchange ) but the gas never showed up on there and now nothing does! Lol

I am waiting for new meters fitted hopefully SMET2’s but they said they have run out of IHD’s so I was thinking of buying either an Ivie Bud OR a GLOW IHD but I do need one which preferably has a BATTERY LIFE so I can top up when off supply and also initially pair it outside in my brick built bin / meter cupboard

I personally do not like the LOOK of the Glow and it is more expensive but I need to know on both IHD’s can you have just your gas and electric PAYG BALANCE showing on the home screen always as I do not want to see my daily usage so far that day , it will cause me ANXIETY more than anything and put me into panic mode which is not good! Lol

I just need to see on my home screen how much I have left on both the gas and electric for peace of mind but also can I actually TOP UP ON the IHD with a top up code please?

Thank you

I wish i could buy one of the Ivie bud version 6 with a battery life but I do not know if the Glow IHD has one but if so I just wish is was prettier AND cheaper!! :-(

Hey @pippyP ,

I can actually recommend another option… Which is don’t do anything until after your meters are replaced. They will be SMETS2 and you’ll get a new IHD as a result which will be paired to the new meters and have full functionality needed for PAYG.

The ivie Bud and Hildebrand Glow IHD unfortunately lack PPMID (Prepayment Meter Interface Device) functionality, meaning you can’t use them to punch in UTRN Codes to force through a top-up manually. The Chameleon IHD6-CAD-PPMID and Chameleon IHD7-CAD-PPMID will have this capability so that’s what I’d recommend. OVO will provide you with one of those as part of the meter exchange and the engineer will pair it for you as part of the process. You can also have just the balance on the home screen if that’s what you prefer - and this is applicable to the ivie Bud and Hildebrand Glow IHD as well.

Hello and thank you so much for your swift and clear response!

I have been told there are NO IHD’s available as they are OUT OF STOCK so I will NOT be getting one with my meter exchange :-(

So people are not wanting the meters WITHOUT the new IHD but I am completely DESPERATE for my new meters for a huge variety of extremely stressful indeed reasons , so I am more than willing and happy JUST to have the meters as I want NO delays now after many a delay

So I will ask to be put on the waiting list for one but it is many months and I was told the waiting list is LONG so even though I am on means tested benefits I would rather not wait TOO long for the one from Boost but I accepted the meter exchange on the proviso and ACCEPTANCE that there were NO IHD’s in stock to come with my meters

I may keep my old Pipit for a while and see if the SMET2’s work with it?

I NEVER ever had the gas meter display anything on it nor did the previous Housing Association tenant ever either , plus hence having to tap in the top up codes into the meter itself but that may ALL be a thing of the past with the SMET2’s??

I think I am just so excited about how it is going to change my life ( I am nearly 60 years old with joint pain and mobility issues and I have to CLIMB INTO my smelly old OUTDOOR BIN CUPBOARD full of spiders and cobwebs on a FOOTSTOOL and in the RAIN and SNOW etc to check and even top up my meters ) so it will be utter BLISS to have a working IHD in my lovely and warm kitchen :-)

No worries.

I’m afraid the Secure Pipit 500 is incompatible with ALL SMETS2 meters. It won’t work at all.

I also highly doubt you won’t get an IHD with the new meters. OVO’s stock of them to post out randomly has run out, but all engineers carry a bunch of them in the van. You’ll get one immediately from the engineer, no waiting list required.

You appear to be a vulnerable customer, have you perhaps considered moving to Pay Monthly instead? I’m concerned that being on PAYG isn’t appropriate for you. The Boost Support Team can help you to switch to OVO Pay Monthly on request.

I am confused about which ones have battery life? Lol

I wonder if it is worth me just seeing if the old Pipit will pair with it for now and see if I can be put on the waiting list for the Chameleon as I would absolutely LOVE one of those , the only problem being does that one have battery power?

Thank you for confirming I can simply have my balances as my home screen :-)

I have nothing whatsoever working and only one £66 voucher for October which will fairly soon go out of date ( cannot be used till the meter exchange , not sure it will work AFTER the meter exchange or whether i will have a NEW 19 digit bar code number linking to my new PAYG meter then?? :-/ :-/ No idea

Oh no that is a pity , what do I DO with the old Pipit then to recycle it?

I am not only vulnerable myself I am the sole carer of my Autistic teenage Grandson and I used to be on billing before we moved to our dream home near the countryside lol

I inherited the Boost meters and sadly it has unfortunately been nothing but trouble but I am also AFRAID of how much my direct debits will be on billing now and at least this way i am in control and in the black always , not struggling

I actually like the being in control bit but NOT the climbing into my stinky bin cupboard full of spiders and cobwebs! Lol

If the SMET2’s WORK a treat then I should not have any further problems with them but if I DO I will the certainly have to move to billing simply sue to the stress factor as being a carer I am needed entirely well by my Grandson NOT on the phone in tears to my energy supplier ( the reality )

I am not sure if SMET2’s ‘’go wrong’’ as much as the horrendous trouble I have had with the SMET1’s and poor signal etc :-(

It is worth giving it a TRY to see how I get on with it as I absolutely LOVED the IHD and seeing my credit on it , it also gave me a great sense of security until things started to go wrong until neither meter was working , if things go smoothly with the SMET2’s I will give it a jolly good try but then move to billing if I do feel it is more suitable which yes in time as I am NOT getting any YOUNGER it may be best since this is our fantastic forever home now , it is unfortunate the meters are in the stinky bin cupboard lol plus not REACHABLE without CLIMBING plus OUTDOORS in ALL weathers and my Grandson will not have the mental capacity ro eg read them for me even into his adulthood <3 <3 x

I feel I would rather stay in CONTROL during this cost of living crisis and when things SETTLE go onto normal billing :-)

SUCH good news they will have one in their van - I was HOPING they would but it felt like I was hoping against hope after what I was told but even getting the SMET2’s is like gold dust , let alone a Chameleon IHD , am secretly SO jealous of those who have both of those in place with everything going smoothly and ‘’normally’’ so I long for a ‘’normal’’ time after the meters are exchanged as the wireless signal is FAB around here but the mobile signal is absolutely terrible! Lol

I know the SMET1’s will be updated to use the WIFI signal by the end of the year but I cannot even go into all the troubles I have had with them so I would MUCH rather SMET2 up! :-) Lol

Nah, there’s tons of SMETS2 Chameleon IHD6-CAD-PPMID and Chameleon IHD7-CAD-PPMID flying around the stock rooms at OVO’s warehouses. I’m pretty sure of it.

Direct Debit would be the cheapest option to pay, but if you really don’t want to go down that route, you can also just pay on-demand instead. Be advised however, the options are these in the order from cheapest to most expensive:

  1. Direct Debit - ALWAYS the cheapest option
  2. PAYG/Prepayment - Roughly £100 a year more expensive than DD on average
  3. Pay On-Demand - Roughly £200 a year more expensive than DD

I had a feeling there would be some IHD’s tucked away somewhere lol

WOW I am very interested to learn that PAYG is actually £100 less on average than pay on demand!

I thought it would be the other way round

I love standing orders myself , pay majority of my bills that way as I can stay in control of them that way

Would rather ALWAYS remain in CREDIT which ever way I pay but I usually split yearly payments by 12 and pay more than needed in the summer to cover the winter so it all balances out

You can indeed do this via Direct Debit, but no energy supplier supports Standing Orders.

The trick is to feed a bunch of credit into the account early and then maintain a DD amount higher than the minimum amount.

I’ve just caught up with the thread.

@pippyP in case you find it useful, Boost Power have a page dedicated to outlining ways its customers can get help and support this winter, with their Customer Support Package

As Blastoise has mentioned, a credit meter may be better suited if you have mobility issues and topping up manually on the meter is tricky. Please ensure you’re registered on the Priority Services Register.

I’d be hopeful the engineer is able to provide a S2 compatible IHD with the meter as you’re a prepayment customer which uses this to reconnect and see your balance. Perhaps if an IHD isn’t provided when the S2 meters are fitted you could reconsider your preference on staying on a prepayment method. If you decide to join OVO on a credit tariff, here’s the process:

Hello Tim OVO

I cannot go onto billing as yet as I was fitted with an emergency gas meter 3 months ago so I will owe 3 months of gas which I calculate at approx £400 so I need to pay it off on a PAYG meter first as it is the most affordable way for me as a customer service assistant told me they would only take 75p per day off the debt as I have been panicking as am still awaiting a CONFIRMED meter exchange appointment as I do not have it as of yet

I only have an ‘’appointment which is not an appointment’’ and I have received NO confirmation and it is meant to be in just over 2 weeks time ☹️

I would rather pay off the debt which is not my fault it accrued as when the engineer came round to change it to a PAYG meter Boost instructed him to RESET the meters , then leave and since then I cannot top up my electric PAYG meter at ALL as they are not on the Smart network now and Boost told me that my meters were both removed on that day and I had to send photo’s to show that they were NOT

I just cannot top up either meter nor put any of my 2 x £66 COL payment top up vouchers onto them and my worry amongst others is they will EXPIRE by the time I get my new meters fitted or even have a ( confirmed ) appointment which I do not have and for the engineers to attend to do the exchanges!

I am also at risk of my electric meter running out of credit and I do not want to keep having emergency engineers round plus losing electricity supply with a vulnerable and complex needs child in the house who lives with me!!

He would absolutely freak out if the electricity suddenly went off and he has violent meltdowns which is heart breaking and damaging for me so he has to be kept calm at all times due to his neurological disorders and yes of course we are on the Priority Services Register but that does not help me if the electricity supply goes OFF as he will have already totally FREAKED OUT and had a possibly violent meltdown even BEFORE an emergency engineer arrives

Yes I have told Boost all this and no I do not feel that they care 😒😒

If I have BOTH working SMET2 meters and an working IHD my problems will be OVER as I will not have to hardly EVER climb into my outdoor stinky bin cupboard and I just need a confirmed appointment to have my 2 new SMET2 meters fitted and for the engineers to 100% show up on the date given as I already had a recent very disappointing no show which I was since told was an appointment which was not an appointment which took me by surprise as the previous engineer turned up for his appointment with absolutely NO email nor confirmation beforehand so I was not aware of the has to be a ‘’confirmed appointment by email’’ system

Very frustrated 😭😭😭

I have had my smart meter (supplied by SSE) for approx 8 years. The usage display we have does dixplay show current costs unless you work through each fuel individually.  Can I get an up to date display so I can see at a glance both fuel costs

Tim_OVO I do not want this thread to be a ‘’convince me to go onto bills’’ thread please as at this current time it would cause we more distress and worry as at least on PAYG I am in charge of my payments and usage , when it is working

I forgot to say the emergency gas meter which was fitted 3 months ago was NOT a PAYG one nor even a SMART one!

So I need to get back onto PAYG with a SMET2 and working IHD ASAP so I can start paying off the large debt I will now owe

PS My Grandson with high care needs lives with me and so I need everything to be WORKING and smoothly as this has been an extremely stressful and frustrating few months for me trying to sort out this meter exchange! 😥

You probably can.

Would you be OK to post photos of your current smart meters please? I just want to make sure I can recommend the right options to be extra safe.

Gotcha. It looks like you’ve got SMETS1 then, given your IHD is an IHDL SmartView (you’ll know it as the SSE Smart Energy Tracker).

In that case, try either the ivie Bud from https://ivie.co.uk or the Hildebrand Glow IHD from https://shop.glowmarkt.com/products/display-and-cad-combined-for-smart-meter-customers?variant=36560284352664 . Either one is fine. :)

Hey @pippyP,

I’m really sorry to hear this,

The only way to ensure you don’t go off supply is by switching to pay monthly. I understand your concerned this will mean you don’t have control of your bills, but our Collections Team can set up an affordable re-payment plan with you. It’s also cheaper to be on pay monthly.

You will need a smart meter installed first, Boost Energy sort out the transition from PAYG to PAYM.

If you explain the severity of the situation you can be prioritized.

You might be able to book an appointment manually online: Boost Energy Smart Meter

But I feel it would be best to contact Support so they can start the switch from Boost to OVO.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for your reply. I will definitely put money away each month and purchase the updated display in the New Year
