power flex email is far to short notice

I know this has been said before about 7 months ago, but the email notice is much too short.
I’ve just received an email for today at 2pm. I’ve opted in but it’s a waste of time, as I have nothing to shift at this point.
It’s a shame, as I think it’s a good trial.

I wonder. I’m sure 24 hours’ notice would get much better participation than 2 hours, but is that ‘best overall’? It would be comforting for distributors to know, for example, that in an emergency 25% of customers would react given 2 hours notice by SMS, even though 90% would react given longer notice. The lower (‘less good’) response might be enough to mitigate the immediate problem and avoid having to take draconian measures like cutting everybody in the affected area off.

I'm not getting much luck with the 2 hours free electric. Saved 79p one weekend but most it shows as zero savings

The short notice is a part of what they are trialing, ie how short/long do participants need it to be.

From the posts made here so far most find that 2-hours is much too short.

@EnergyDee

I think you are probably just unfortunate in that you have been placed in a trial group who only get two hours notice.  I have got 5 hours notice for every event so far.

My previous view has been that under 24 hours notice is not enough time to schedule good use of the 1kWh (often stated as an hour's) free electricity but the National Grid (NESO) who are offering that don't know until shortly before the point of generation/use what they can offer. I.e. electricity is traded 24 hours before use (the day-ahead market) to balance the grid but just before generation/use it has got out of balance again with too much generation committed.

It's cheaper to give it away than pay generators to curtail the previously ordered power (supply side response). Asking for an hour's notice or even less is more suited to an automated response. E.g. remotely turn on immersion heaters, turn up air condition or heating depending on the season, charge a home battery - a demand side response. However, that does need kit installed to allow that to happen.

Well it’s no good to me l haven’t opted in as we are off to Asda to do some shopping. haven’t got anything to shift like washing or hoovering.

I'm getting about 12 hours notice I think.  Not a lot of use, so far I've saved 25 pence.  Not worth the effort.  So, I opt in but just carry on as normal.  If I save I save.  Needs to be a better incentive for me to change my behaviours.

On the other hand, the two free hours (which I choose to take on Sundays) are worthwhile.

I agree, im in the 2 hours notice group and I keep missing the power ups due to short notice. It's really hard to include it in your plans for the day, especially if you work out of your home or have other commitments. I also wish these notifications were done by text instead of email.

100% agree. I’ve got stuck with the 2 hour notice period too. Absolutely useless especially if I’m not at home.

Give me 24 hours notice or, even better, a calendar I can subscribe to via Google Calendar etc.

So far it’s been a total waste of my time.

The 2hrs notice isn’t enough as I don’t check my emails continually all day long. Sometimes by the time I’ve seen it it’s too late. Often I’ve already used the washing machine etc by the time I get the email or I’m out.

12 hours would be good, I don’t think you’ll really make a massive difference as an individual but if 1000s shift that has to be good.

I hope when the trial data is analysed, the researchers take account of the lost opportunity cost. I’m not the only one saying it’s a good idea but a waste of good will. I’ve ‘saved’ 1p so far😁.
The nudge for me isn’t working, with a 2hour notice.
I agree that a text would probably be more useful for the short notice moves.
Ifind that my behaviour has changed a bit. I am more likely to leave the big use items like washing machines until the afternoon just in case. However, I won’t in the winter unless I know for sure.

Well it’s no good to me as l couldn’t use my free electric today as l am at work. so don’t what happens when you can’t use your free time. sometimes the emails come through late.

All feedback is very valuable @EnergyDee, this is a trial so we’re testing what works well & what could be improved 😊

Thanks for responding @Emmanuelle_OVO .
I appreciate it is a trial. I’m happy to be involved. I think it will probably prove to be useful for the company.

Keith  Lamb is correct

Why don’t they go back to the old system of notifying us the day before

Hi @violetgez @keithlamb ,

This is part of how the trial works, per the way its set up upstream with the CrowdFlex Project.

Some folks will get alerts the day before, others with shorter notice - it’s all about seeing what works best. You are probably in the cohort that gets the shorter notice. I’m afraid this cannot be modified at this time.

It may change in future runs.

Assume this thread relates to Power Move and the limited notification we get before an event. More notice would of course be helpful but the timing depends on usage on the grid and this often cannot be calculated earlier. Also this is a trial so no doubt it will develop in the future.

Yes you are right not enough time to do anything. but yesterday evening l kept getting emails for today don’t know if was an error or not about five or six for today thought it was strange. but might be able to do today’s one as l am not working today.

Hey everyone,

Just a reminder that Power Move Flex is a trial and part of Crowdflex. This means that we’re testing different communication methods and timescales to see what works best overall and we’re collating feedback from our users. As @Blastoise186 has said this can’t be changed once you’re in the group we’re using your feedback to help us build the future of Power Move Flex so the more indepth feedback you can give the more helpful it will be.

I encourage anyone participating to share constructive feedback on what works well for them and any challenges they encounter, along with the reasons behind those challenges. We all have different needs regarding how much notice we require, depending on our personal circumstances. I hope this information is helpful.

I just put my washing on and have just received notification of a power up at 2.00 - only 1.5 hours notice so even worse than the usual 2 hours.

There may be hope for those complaining about short notice.  Since trial started I have always been getting 5 hours notice but now seem to have been switched to 2 hours.  Perhaps the 2 hour people might get changed to longer warning groups.

Morning @EnergyDee,

Thanks for letting us know - I’m glad the reminder has made things easier 😁.
