Deenergised Meter

When I switched to a smart meter due to the RTS switch off my supplier was OVO and I was told that everything would sort itself out in 6 weeks. In the meantime I decided to switch supplier and chose Ecotricty. When I was talking to them about this (July 2025) they said that I had two meters registered to me my new smart one and one that must have been the old rts meter. They took on my supply for the smart meter and everything has been fine and I assumed that the other meter still being registered to me was part of the 6 weeks needed to sort everything out.

Fast forward to now and I’ve been looking at electricity prices due to the Iran issue and noticed that OVO never appeared in any results so I went to their website and entered my details and got this.

So I still have my old rts meter registered to me and this would apparently prevent me switching to OVO. I asked Ecotricity about this and they told me the meter still shows as deenergised and OVO is the supplier attached to that meter.

So what is the quickest way to get this fixed considering this should have been done during the rts change?

Howdy @awills61 , it’s been a while! :)

Please call OVO Support for this one - they’ll need to do the switch over the phone and disable the dead meter from their side.

Hello @Blastoise186 yes it has been a while. I still check in on the forum every so often.

I’ve just spent a fruitless 15 minutes on the phone to support. The first person didn’t really understand what the problem was and said that I only had one meter. After some further discussion they passed me over to another department who listened to my explanation and then cut me off.

This is only a minor issue for me at present but it may mean that I miss out on a better dealing the future if other companies reject me, like OVO, because of a meter that no longer exists.

I’ve tried a web chat and the agent told me that both my smart meter and the de-energised rts meter both show Ecotricity as the supplier.

They also said that the screenshot was ‘probably an online error’.

Hmm…

I think I can break the deadlock with a magic trick. Do you know which DNO you run on? If you do, get them to pull the records for your property as they can see exactly what is listed, who the supplier is and the current status.

If you don’t know who the DNO is, let me know your county/region and I’ll grab the details for you.

My DNO is SSEN I think as I am in region 17. I will try them tomorrow.

@awills61 nice to see you again, and I’m sorry for the issues you’re facing at the moment.

If you like, I can send you a private message to get some details, and try and see what we can do  internally to get you switched over? Let me know if you’d like this, and I’ll send you a DM. I’m thinking that the way the National Database is laid out at the moment is preventing you signing up online, and this just needs to be done manually.

Cheers!

Thanks @Ben_OVO I’m not planning to switch at the moment. I’m just looking around and so I was trying to find out if there was an issue with my meter details on the national database that causes the screenshot shown above. Yesterday’s web chat with OVO ended with me being told that my smart meter and the old rts meter both have Ecotricity as the registered supplier and Ecotricity say they are registered againstbthe smart meter but OVO are registered against the rts meter. If you can help get a definitive answer to this please DM me.

I’ve tried my DNO. Their reply was ‘We are not a supplier we are just a DNO and unfirtunately cannot assist regarding the meter side. You would need to speak to whoever you pay your direct debit to’.
