New smart meter with Economy 10- Storage heaters switching off 10 minutes after rate change?

Hi,

Have recently been switched from THTC to Economy 10 because of the RTS signal switch off and have a new smart meter.

I also have storage heaters that are switched by the meter to come on and go off at the rate change. At present although the rate changes at the specified times the heaters themselves are not coming on until about nine minutes later and conversely are running on past the rate change by nine minutes. Does this mean I am paying those 9 minutes at the higher rate ?

If so how can I get the times for switching off the heater circuit to be in line with the rate change as this is set in the meter?

Does anyone else have this problem, and what is the answer?

Any help would be appreciated.

Where are you seeing the rate change - at the meter itself , or on the IHD?

This is a bit of a controversial point. The delay @Blastoise186 referred to (the so-called randomized offset unique to the meter) is supposed to apply both to switching times and to tariff changes. If you’re seeing the rate change on the meter nine minutes before the heating circuit is switched on, I think there’s something wrong. This is what SMETS2 says:

5.7.5.28 Randomised Offset [INFO]
The product of the Randomised Offset Limit(5.7.4.33) and the Randomised Offset Number(5.7.1.5) rounded to the nearest second. This value is used to delay the Tariff Switching Table times, the Auxiliary Load Control Switch switching times, and HAN Connected Auxiliary Load Control Switch switching times.

Can you confirm that the tariff is changing at different times from load switching? You can only do this by watching the meter itself at the appropriate time. If you can, something isn’t right IMO.

Hi @ubhank48 ,

This is expected behaviour - it helps to prevent the National Grid blowing up by switching such massive loads at once. It’s a feature, not a bug.

You’ll be charged Off-Peak for those 9 minutes.

I am seeing the rate change on the IHD. I have not checked the actual meter as it is outside. I will try and check tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

If the rate change is showing on the IHD, then it’ll have done the same on the meter too - the IHD gets its data directly from the meters.

@Blastoise186 Thanks for the reply. Saves me looking at the meter.
