does my meter have an internal clock, so not affected by the rts switch off?

Hi

I am on economy 10 tariff with OVO, we only have storage heaters. Last year I booked the appointment for the new smart meter to be installed due to the RTS switch off. The ovo engineer was a lovely old chap, who, as it turned out had originally installed the meters (long before we bought the house). He said we do not need to change as our meters do not use the RTS signal. I asked him to please inform Ovo of this as they keep harassing me to change. ( months later and I am getting almost daily contact to change as they now say we will not have power after the 5th May 2026. The person I spoke to tried to deny that their engineer had ever been to our house!!! The meter I have is a typeS123B03. I have also been told by Ovo in the past that I am correct in beleiving that smart meters will not operate correctly at our house, there is no mobile signal from any provider and no broadband to the property. Can anyone help me know if my meter is the type that has its own internal clock and therefore does not need changing, so I can finally shut Ovo up?

Hi @directorhownhall ,

Apologies but I couldn’t identify your meter from the details provided so far.

Please can you provide photos of the meter and everything around it? Once I have those, I’ll be able to help you out.

Thanks!

Thanks! Here’s what I’ve got in my databanks for your meter:

Make/Model: Horstmann S123B03 - Horstmann is now known as Secure

Certified: September 2011

Meter Asset Provider: Most likely Morrison Data Services/M Group Energy - OVO (S) Metering Limited (formerly SSE Metering Limited) was dissolved in December 2023 as its purpose no longer existed.

Type: Economy 10 Non-RTS - Locally Controlled via Built-In Local Timeswitch

Smart Metering Support: No - Not Supported (incompatible) - unit does not comply with SMETS1 or SMETS2 Spec and is not compatible with AMR or Pre-SMETS Communications Devices

RTS Support: No - Not Supported (incompatible)

Support Status: Discontinued by Manufacturer, estimated End of Service Life by September 2031 (conservative), alternatively September 2026 (aggressive)

Please be advised however, that this is a legacy model and it’s worth doing a Smart Meter upgrade anyway - OVO now has units pre-configured for E10 which can run without a signal if required.

Thank you for the information Blastoise186. So, sorry for being a luddite, but does that mean my hot water etc will not work after May5th as Ovo are telling me? of does this unit have it’s own timeclock? Or is it still relying on some kind of signal? Whenever I speak to Ovo, the representative doesn’t seem to understand economy 10 and that there is no phon signal etc here. It is rural but 20 mins from a city, we’re just in a total blackspot, I don’t even have a phoneline as BT won’t give us one and they have no intention of supplying broadband to five houses!!!

Correct - it’s running locally so it doesn’t even get a signal of any kind. As long as the internal clock inside the meter itself doesn’t go pop, your heating/hot water should continue to work as-is (obviously assuming nothing else breaks like your boiler).

If you don’t mind me asking, what region/county are you in? We don’t usually do broadband/phone advice here (OVO thought about it once but canned the idea!) but I can tell you what comms might work for a Smart Meter.

Also check out Airband and Starlink if you need internet - those options may work for you as they don’t rely on BT digging up streets. For those two you basically just need to be in a service area and (for Airband) be close enough to one of their towers which have a pretty decent range. Starlink may work well if you can see the sky - which is probably easy if you’re in a rural area.

We do have starlink, otherwise we’d be in the dark ages!!!!

Hehehe, I had a feeling that was the case. :)

But yeah, OVO is hoping to get hold of upgraded Smart Meters that have the ability to run via Broadband as a fallback option if no other WAN is available. In the meantime, OVO is able to install E10 Smart Meters with the times pre-programmed prior to install if that helps.

Hey all!

Information above looks correct, non-RTS meter and VWAN will be coming at some point over the next couple of years opening up lots of customers!

Hope thats ok?

@directorhownhall - Your off peak supply will continue to work post switch off as it DOESNT rely on the RTS signals. Thank you
