Second hand Indra Pro EV charger didn't come with CT clamp?

I've bought the Indra Pro EV charger second hand as I needed to get one installed on a budget. Unfortunately it did not come with the CT clamp. I can't find any compatible clamp online as I am told they are not all created equal. The companies support won't provide the specs but will sell me one for £50 which is quite spicy and an unexpected blow to my budget. If anyone has the charger could you take a photo of your CT clamp? Perhaps any markings on the side, model or specs. If anyone knows the specs I'd be eternally grateful! I'd like to source this from a third party if possible if I can make a substantial saving.

I’ve double checked this with Indra. They have asked me to make it crystal clear that the use of ANY third-party CT Clamp is completely unsupported and they are not willing to assist with such accessories and there’s a high chance it will not work at all. They do not release details of the specifications or part numbers as these are for internal use only. Additionally, they have cited electrical safety concerns over the use of third-party CT Clamps and refuse to allow their installers to fit them.

They are also not obligated nor willing to provide free support for second-hand units, so anything you ask them to do may incur a charge due to the unknown state of the charger. If they’ve offered to sell you a new one for £50 + installation, I suspect that’s your only option. They control the supply chain pretty tightly so I doubt you’ll get it cheaper elsewhere.

Indra has also advised that they will refuse to fit the CT Clamp if the charger isn’t in a satisfactory condition.

Hi @Mongoose92 ,

This is, I’m afraid, one of the reasons why buying an EV Charger second-hand is a risky gamble and it sounds like you got a bit burned.

Unfortunately, the only place to get the CT Clamp is from either Indra themselves, or one of their authorised installers. This is mainly for safety reasons but also to ensure it works properly. No guarantees can be made at all if you use a third-party one.

If you ask Indra, they can assist further and/or put you in touch with an installer who can sort you out. You MUST get an authorised installer to fit the CT Clamp though so it’ll ultimately cost you more than £50 for parts! It’s quite possible that once you factor that in, you may be getting pretty close to the original price of the charger as-new, except you don’t have a warranty.

Sorry about that.

Hey @Mongoose92

I’m glad to see Blastoise186 has already stopped by with some helpful advice here for you.

I hope you’ve found that useful. If you do still have any questions or concerns about the set up, I’d contacting Indra as they may still be able to provide the part or as Blastoise also mentions, from an authorised third party installer to ensure it’s been fitted correctly - but I’d probably reach out to Indra first and see if they can help get one to you. You can contact Indra through this page.

Do let us know how you get one here.

Thank you both for the feedback. I’m aware it will need professional installation which I had booked in. Fundamentally I think £50 for a CT clamp from Indra seems pretty steep and I was hoping to use a compatible after market item or get the manufacturer approved one slightly cheaper somewhere else. They will send me one, but they won’t provide the specifications which is a bit sneaky honestly.

If anyone does know the specs or part number, I’d be grateful.

I appreciate you taking the time to talk to Indra, that’s really a lot of effort on your behalf for which I thank you!

I don’t think much of Indra's response. It’s a cop-out excuse that they can’t give out the specifications, it’s just vendor lock-in. This attitude makes the unit difficult to repair or maintain once the manufacture warranty is over, forcing people to buy new ones. I for one would prefer to keep things out of landfill.

Fundamentally they should stand by their product, provide spare parts at a reasonable cost and be able to provide the specifications. They have already made a good chunk of money on the initial purchase and install. I do think it’s fair to charge reasonably for significant extra support or diagnosis, but I don’t think this falls under it.

For those who are looking for the information like I was, I’ve found another owner who has sent me a picture of their installed CT clamp that works perfectly. You can find it for £10 on amazon by searching for “SCT013-000 100A 50mA Non-invasive Split Core Current Transformer Sensor” it’s made by YHDC. Make sure to get a 100A:50mA version. You can also get it from other electrical suppliers if that’s your preference.
