Has anyone else found a scheduling conflict (Volvo / Hypervolt)?

I am using the Charge app and the Hypervolt Pro 3 (bought through OVO) to charge my Volvo XC40 Recharge.

It doesn’t work.

Customer service has been woeful. I have to wait for 40 minutes plus to speak to someone, who doesn’t have an answer and who promises to ‘escalate’ it. I’ve had a ‘ticket raised’ which amounted to zero contact. I’ve sent three emails and had no response to any of them.

So what’s happening…

The car doesn’t charge through the app. I set the schedule, wake up the next day and nothing. I thought it might be the fact that Vovlo settings have their own schedule internally - I disabled it. It worked. Then it didn’t again.

When I looked, something between the app and the car had switched the Volvo’s internal schedule on again. This morning however, that wasn’t the case at all, it was still disabled but the car hadn’t charged. When I went to bed last night the schedule was set for it all to be done by 0700 this morning through the Charge app.

There is nothing wrong with the charger - when it does schedule a charge it works fine. But it rarely works at all.
My research (if you can call it that) says that there is an issue with the Charge Connect Protocol (CCP) but I do not know how to resolve it - and it seems, neither do OVO. I signed up to another fixed rate tarrif with OVO because I liked them and this charge anytime seemed like a good thing. But in fact, I am having to use public chargers a lot and this EV is now actually costing me more to run than my old diesel.

I’ve deleted the apps and reinstalled them. Several times.

Does anyone have any ideas? I’ve already told OVO that if they can’t resolve this they need to remove the charger, refund the money and release me from my contract - I haven’t received the services promised. But I don’t want it to get to that, it would be far easier and better just to have this issue resolved.

Hi Fozz,

I had similar issues with my VW and charger, and spent a lot of time going round in circles - I think a lot of the confusion was down to mixed messages from OVO (and probably my own lack of knowledge) about the differences between charging via the car and charging via the charger.  It seems like you’ve had a similar mix of advice?

If you want your charger to control the charging, you don’t need the OVO app - you just link your charger to your OVO account and then use the hypervolt app to schedule charging:  How to set up your smart charger to use it with Charge Anytime | The OVO Forum

If you want your car to run the charging (this is how I eventually got it to work) you need to use the OVO app.  I set my hcharger to ‘dumb’ mode (plug and charge), removed all the schedules and rules from the VW app, and then set-up the OVO app as described here:  How to set up a compatible electric vehicle with Charge Anytime | The OVO Forum

Which approach are you trying?

@Fozz welcome to the OVO Forum. I’ve updated your profile to show you’ve got an EV.

Thanks for posting, and I’m really sorry to hear what’s happened here - worst possible start to being a Charge Anytime customer. I’ve reached out to you via a DM, please get back to me when you can.

Cheers.

Hi @Fozz,

Just to let you know, the Charge Anytime team have come back with this advice:

To resolve the charging issues, it’s important to address potential conflicts between the charger and vehicle schedules. Depending on your situation, here are the recommended steps:
If you have multiple electric plug-in vehicles:

  • We will delete your Charge Anytime account from our end.
  • You will need to set up your Hypervolt charger again from scratch using the OVO Charge app.
  • Please avoid linking the Volvo vehicle to Charge Anytime via the Volvo app.
  • Remove all schedules and locations for the Volvo in the Volvo app.
  • Moving forward, use only the OVO Charge app for smart charging.
If you only have the one electric plug-in vehicle (Volvo XC40):
  • Delete the Hypervolt charger from the OVO Charge app.
  • Log out of the ‘Home’ charging section of the OVO Charge app.
  • Put your Hypervolt charger into Plug & Charge mode via the Hypervolt app.
  • Moving forward, use only the Volvo app for smart charging.

The charging issues are being caused by conflicting charge schedules between the charger and vehicle, so following the steps above should help prevent further conflicts.

Let us know how you get on with this, cheers!

Right…

This isn’t working because now I don’t get the Charge Anytime tariff… I would have thought that this would be obvious to be honest.

Everytime I now plug the car in, it charges and you are charging me for ‘urgent charge’ rather than the Charge Anytime rate. The whole reason I signed on again for OVO’s fixed rate was so that I could use the Charge Anytime tarrif. I bought my charger through you as well. That means you’ve taken money from me and continue to do so, but are not delivering the service you promised.

I’ve been going round in circles for ages with this now and I am getting to the point where I’m pretty fed up with it. Surely if there are no other people with this issue with a Volvo recharge, the problem has to be on your end somewhere and it must be resolvable.

If you are not able to provide me with the Charge Anytime tariff for some inexplicable reason, then I need to cancel my contract with you. You should also provide me with a good will payment as compensation for the stupid amounts of money I have had to spend on both public charging, ‘urgent charge’ and the inability to get the rate you promised. As you can tell, I’m pretty fed up!

@Fozz I’m sorry - this is really frustrating to hear.

Just to confirm, the Forum isn’t a contact channel to OVO, so we (the Forum team) can’t handle complaints and offer goodwill gestures etc. This sort of thing needs to go through our internal teams, eg Charge Anytime / Customer Services.

I’ve reached out to Charge Anytime to see if they have any further advice on top of what’s been given, I’ll let you know if I get an answer back.

@Fozz an update from the Charge Anytime team:

Minimum battery level is set at 20% which means it will automatically urgent charge as soon as they plug in if their battery level is below 20%

After the battery reaches 20% it'll go back to smart charging.

They can update this from their app.

So the fix would be to set the minimum level to 0%. Please let me know if this fixes the issue for you.

Hi Ben

Just to be clear, your team told me to delete the Hypervolt Pro 3 charger from the Charge App. That means that the Charge App no longer controls my charging - your team told me that going forward, the Volvo needs to control the charging to avoid conflicts. So when I plug it in, regardless of it charging to 20%, it doesn’t switch over to the Charge Anytime tariff after that. Your team told me to remove smart charging from the Volvo App so that it isn’t controlling the charging. I’m really now not sure what it is your team is telling me I should do.

I changed this over yesterday following your message on here. I plugged the car in last night with 24% charge already in the car and as your team should be able to see from the billing, it simply charged to 90% on the standard tariff.

It would be a hell of a lot easier if someone just called me and put this right. But I have to wait up to 40 minutes to speak to someone and then they don’t know what to do and have to raise a ticket. Meanwhile, your ‘Complaints’ team (who send an automatic response saying that they will be in touch withing two days) have failed to contact me at all from an email I sent them on the 24th of October. I have followed this up with a further email yesterday.

I seem to be going ‘round in circles here with all sorts of conflicting advice. Please can someone grip this and put it right?

Thanks
